The Diploma Plus Certificate in Engineering Mathematics and Science (PCEMS) programme covers the curricula of existing engineering course mathematics and advanced engineering mathematics topics, as well as topics in physics, programming and statistics, depending on students - choice of elective.
The programme is aimed at preparing students for further studies in engineering. PCEMS students who complete the programme may receive module exemptions from local universities when they pursue certain engineering degrees.
Feedback from local universities has indicated that polytechnic graduates pursuing engineering degree studies, in general, faced difficulties in three foundational subjects, namely, Mathematics, Programming and Science (viz. Physics). In addressing this concern and at the same time providing a more flexible learning system to Singapore Polytechnic's educational model, the PCEMS programme was designed for more academically able students with higher aptitudes in mathematics and science.
The PCEMS programme aims to provide specific training in engineering mathematics which will equip successful students with a sound foundation so that when they gain entry to university, they will be able to:
- a) use mathematics effectively in engineering studies
- b) acquire more advanced engineering mathematics knowledge and skills
In addition, the PCEMS programme also aims to enable students to acquire additional knowledge in Physics, Programming or Probability & Statistics.
The PCEMS programme will be offered to eligible students from the following 18 Diploma courses:
