Specialist Diploma in Civil Engineering (Productivity & Technology)


Introduction

 

Specialist Diploma in Civil Engineering (Productivity & Technology) is specifically designed to align with the SkillsFuture initiative which aims to enhance the career progression of Civil Engineering diploma graduates in the built environment sector through skills deepening and obtaining relevant certification.

The coverage of this course is in line with the Built Environment Sectoral Manpower Plan to include the emerging trend of adopting productive technologies in the built environment sector, such as Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), Prefabricated Pre-finished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

It is also designed with stackable Post-Diploma Certificates which may lead to an Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering.

This course is also applicable for applicants who wish to embark on BCA’s Post-Diploma Development Programme (equivalent of WDA’s Earn & Learn Scheme).

Course Objectives

 

This course aims to deepen the knowledge and skills of fresh polytechnic graduates and civil engineering professionals in the areas of productive technologies to enhance occupational and personal competencies for better career progression in the industry.

 

Suitable for

 

The Specialist Diploma in Civil Engineering (Productivity & Technology) is suitable for applicants who wish to gain deeper skills and knowledge in new construction technologies and management.

 


 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants should have a diploma or higher qualification in any related area of civil engineering.

Applicants with a diploma or higher qualification that not related to civil engineering will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may at the discretion of the polytechnic be invited to sit for entrance tests.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness.  Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.


Course Outline

 

This modular certificate course is presented through lectures and practical sessions. Participants will undergo a structured 12-month programme over two semester periods. Conceptual knowledge and principles are presented in lectures while mini-projects reinforce the understanding. Learning outcomes are tested by way of written tests, quizzes, assignments and projects.

This course consists of 2 Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs) and the details are shown below.

PDC 1 Construction Productivity Management
Module 1 - Building Information Modelling for Projects
Module 2 - Construction Project Management

All participants are required to attend two evening classes per week, from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. There are 15 weeks in one semester.

PDC 2 Construction Technology
Module 3 - Advanced Construction Technology
Module 4 - Measurement of Civil Engineering & Building Works
Module 5 - Precast & Prestressed Concrete Technology

All participants are required to attend three evening classes per week: 
Module 3 - from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm
Module 4 - from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Module 5 - From 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
 
There are 15 weeks in one semester.

Award / Certification / Accreditation

 

Upon completion of 2 Post-Diploma Certificates, the participant will be conferred Specialist Diploma in Civil Engineering (Productivity & Technology) from Singapore Polytechnic.

 

Resident Engineer and Registered Technical Officer will also be awarded with 12 Supervision Training Unit (STU) (Structural) from the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) when they completed the course.
