Diploma (Conversion) in Shipping and Marine Offshore


This one-year post-diploma programme provides the students with the theoretical knowledge and principles in shipping and offshore operations so that they will have a greater understanding of the rapidly changing industry practices and concepts.  It is the only course that offers both the elements of shipping and marine offshore operations and management from a holistic perspective.

Course Objectives


This course aims to equip non-maritime and offshore graduates with knowledge and skills in shipping and offshore operations and management so that they can join the maritime industry as senior executives/junior managers and perform their jobs with a greater level of competence and understanding. They will also have brighter prospects for upward career mobility after gaining adequate experiences and/or further academic qualifications.


Suitable for


Shipping and offshore executives and higher, currently working in the maritime industry but do not possess maritime qualifications or relevant sea-going experience. This Diploma Conversion programme will also be suitable for maritime executives who possess the requisite maritime qualifications but are keen to enhance and/or upgrade their existing knowledge and skills.

The course is suitable for professionals in other relevant fields such as Engineering, IT and/or the services industry, who are keen to switch to a career in the maritime industry and to maritime consultants and/or nautical/engineering sea going junior officers who may be keen to supplement their technical and/or navigational skills with commercial and shore based operational knowledge so as to prepare for a shore-based career in the local maritime industry.



Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants with the following qualifications from a recognized Institution may be considered:

* Polytechnic Diploma in any discipline, or
* Degree in any discipline, or
* Deck/Marine Engineer Officer Class 2 Certificate of Competency

Non-Singaporeans must be working in Singapore and possess a valid Employment Pass / Work Permit / Dependant’s Pass throughout the course duration.  They would need to bear the full risk of non-completion should their pass expire within the duration of the course.

* Foreign qualifications will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness.  Suitable applicants who are shortlisted will have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.

The curriculum consists of 2 post diploma certificates (PDCs). Each PDC comprises three modules and the details are as follows:

Semester One

PDC1 Certificate in Shipping Business and Operation
Module 1 - Maritime Economics and Shipbroking
Module 2 - Maritime Law and Insurance
Module 3 - Port and Cargo Management

Semester Two

PDC2 Certificate in Ship Management and Marine Offshore 
Module 4 - Marketing and Financial Management
Module 5 - Ship Management and Surveying
Module 6 - Maritime and Offshore Operations

All participants are required to attend three evening classes per week. For Semester 1, the classes are scheduled every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 pm to 09:30 pm. For Semester 2, the classes are scheduled every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 pm to 09:30 pm.

Award / Certification / Accreditation

Upon completion of two Certificates within a two-year validity period, the participant will be conferred a Diploma (Conversion) qualification from Singapore Polytechnic.

- Post Diploma Module Certificate fee is payable on a semester basis.

- Post Diploma course participants who submit the withdrawal notification 2 weeks before course commencement, an administrative fee of $50 (before GST) would be levied.
