Diploma (Conversion) in Shipping Operations and Management

 

Introduction

This one-year programme is targeted at shipping and logistics personnel with a polytechnic diploma or higher qualifications. It aims to give participants a greater level of understanding in shipping operations and shipping management. Junior and middle management executives who complete this diploma will be able to perform their jobs with a greater level of competence and understanding.

Course Objectives


This course aims to equip non-maritime and logistics graduates with knowledge and skills in shipping operations and logistics management so that they can apply themselves effectively to broaden the scope of their job function beyond their specialized domain, thus enhancing future advancement prospects in their workplace.

 

Suitable for


Maritime and logistics executives and higher, currently working in the shipping industry but do not possess maritime qualifications or relevant sea-going experience. This Diploma programme would also be suitable for maritime executives who possess the requisite maritime qualifications but are keen to enhance and/or upgrade their existing knowledge and skills.

The course could also be suitable for professionals in other relevant fields such as Engineering, IT and/or the services industry, keen to switch to a career in the maritime industry and to maritime consultants and/or nautical/engineering sea going junior officers who may be keen to supplement their technical and/or navigational skills with commercial and shore based operational knowledge so as to prepare for a shore-based career in the local maritime industry.


 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants with the following qualifications from a recognised Institution may be considered:
* Polytechnic Diploma in any discipline, or 
* Degree in any discipline, or 
* Deck/Marine Engineer Officer Class 2 Certificate of Competency

Non-Singaporeans must be working in Singapore and possess a valid Employment Pass / Work Permit / Dependant’s Pass throughout the course duration.  They would need to bear the full risk of non-completion should their pass expire and subsequently lapse within the duration of the course.

* Foreign qualifications will be assessed on a case by case basis.

Course Outline


There are 3 modules in each part at 45 hours per module, which make up a total of 135 hours for each part and 270 hours for the whole course.

This course consists of 2 post diploma certificates (PDCs). Each PDC comprises three modules and the details are as follows:

Semester One
PDC 1 Certificate in Shipping Business and Operation

Module 1 – Maritime Economics and Shipbroking
Module 2 – Maritime Law and Insurance
Module 3 – Port and Cargo Management

Semester Two
PDC 2 Certificate in Ship Management and Finance

Module 4 – Marketing and Financial Management
Module 5 – Ship Management and Offshore
Module 6 – Supply Chain Management

All participants are required to attend three evening classes per week. For Semester 1, the classes are scheduled every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 pm to 09:30 pm. For Semester 2, the classes are scheduled every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 pm to 09:30 pm.


 

Award / Certification / Accreditation


Upon completion of two Certificates within a two-year validity period, the participant will be conferred a Diploma (Conversion) qualification from Singapore Polytechnic.
