Specialist Diploma in Statistics & Data Mining

Introduction

Data has become ubiquitous in government, online industries, and in traditional industries including banking, insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, manufacturing, and retail.  Jobs in these industries involve working with data and extracting information that is useful to the business.  Even employees whose primary role is not working with data are often required to have a basic “data literacy”.

Students are expected to have access to computer and internet during your study at SP eg. e-learning, writing report, etc.

Course Objectives

This course aims to provide foundational training in the fundamental concepts and methods of statistics and data mining to working adults, whose jobs require analysing and understanding data.

Suitable for

This course is suitable for diploma or degree holders whose jobs require them to summarise and present data, analyse data statistically, and develop statistical and data mining models.  Because the course is a mix of theory and application, candidates must be mathematically-inclined, and have a strong interest in understanding the theory underlying statistical and data mining methods.

Special Requirements

Students in this course are required to have a notebook computer which can be configured to run a recent version of the Windows operating system. Apple computer users can install both Mac OS X and the Windows OS on their computers using the Boot Camp software (available from Apple).
