Diploma in Environmental Management & Water Technology  (DEWT)

The Diploma in Environmental Management and Water Technology aims to equip students with skills that are important for this nascent economic sector that are also in line with PUB’s Active Beautiful Clean (ABC) Waters Design, among other government initiatives.

The government established the National Research Foundation to provide funding of $330 million for strategic R&D initiatives to promote the growth of the environmental and water sector. Globally, Singapore has plans to collaborate with other countries in water technology, including wastewater treatment, reverse osmosis and desalination. It is estimated that the Asian environmental engineering market alone (excluding Japan) is worth $37 billion a year and has the potential to triple to $105 billion.

Students will be provided with hands-on and active learning opportunities, such as the building of water-treatment kits and the operation of desalination and water treatment model plants, as well as case studies, project-based learning, problem-based learning and the final-year environmental management and water technology projects, to learn how environmental managers, water technologists and engineers contribute to the management of the environment and help provide solutions for a clean water supply.

This course will require students to work as individuals and in small groups so as to build teamwork, cultivate self-confidence and develop interpersonal skills. Assignments are also designed to allow the integration of concepts, the expression of personal abilities and interests, as well as to stimulate students to be innovative and to apply sound engineering principles and design concepts.

As polytechnic graduates today are expected to be versatile and be able to work in a cross-disciplinary environment, this course prepares students for such an environment with its multi-disciplinary programme, conceived with inputs from the School of Chemical & Life Sciences, School of Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering, School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and SP’s Centre for Applications in Environmental Technology. The involvement of other schools in this programme means that students are allowed access to their latest and most sophisticated equipment.

The course offers:

• A 12-week internship • Environmental Projects 1 & 2 which are linked to the industry through civil engineering, environmental and water-related companies

• A Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDlO) framework that prepares students to be work ready, life ready and world ready

• An option for students to take a Diploma-plus certificate course which will continue to train students to acquire knowledge, skills and the right attitude for work and life
