Overseas Programme
Learning: an Authentic Environment,
a Global Experience, a Personal Journey
Overseas Industrial Training Programme
“Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand” is most aptly reflected by the industrial training experience in our diploma courses. Here, our students have the opportunity to witness the application of the knowledge and skills taught in a real world environment as well as broaden their perception and educational experience. For most students, this is also a personal journey of growth and development of what it means to be an independent learner, a good team member, good communication and to step-up and take the lead.
Students in the School of Chemical and Life Sciences, besides having a choice of industrial training opportunities at local SMEs, MNCs, research institutions, and government agencies, also opportunities to pursue this industrial training experience in Australia, China, United Kingdom, United States of America.
Overseas Immersion Programme
To inculcate the global mindset, where students learn to adjust and innovate to adapt to the interconnectivity of the social and economic development of different cultures, an Overseas Immersion Program at Dalian, People’s Republic of China, was implemented for the students from the Diploma in Food Science & Technology (DFST) course since 2009.
In the two months immersion program, students stayed in the International Students Dormitory where students from Korea, Japan, Europe and other countries were also housed. Students had the opportunity to meet with students from the various countries in the dormitory area. The DFST students were also paired up with the local Chinese Food Science students individually. This buddy arrangement was very meaningful as they shared the same passion for “food”. The dormitory environment was conducive for social interactions and provides the building of friendships and sharing of SP core values amongst the students.
Besides learning three modules in Dalian in the context of China, students had the opportunity to visit food factories, food expo, places of interests in Dalian and Beijing. These exposures heightened the awareness of the social, political, economical and cultural development in China. It was indeed a rewarding and fruitful experience for the DFST students and staff.
