Local universities are also taking design thinking very seriously, infusing design thinking into their course curricula. The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has launched four design-centric degree programmes, addressing the need of nurturing a new breed of engineers who are technically competent and well-versed in design-driven innovations.
This course offers you a unique curriculum in both Info-communications Engineering and Design Thinking Process. You will build a solid foundation in the following four major growth areas of the infocomm industry: Communication Engineering; Mobile Applications & Wireless Communications; Broadband Technologies, Networking & Security; and Internet Application Development.

You will receive training on state-of-art facilities with equipment from leading companies like Cisco, Agilent, Tektronix, and Rohde & Schwarz. You will also gain knowledge on the popular infocomm technologies like Android, FTTH, MPLS, 4G, and virtualization.
The first two years of the course will help you to build up a strong foundation, and to prepare you for specialisation in the third year of the course, where you will select one of the three options:
Wireless & Digital Media Communication Option
This option covers the coding and delivery of multimedia contents. You will learn the important engineering fundamentals of video, image, and audio compression, covering the standards like MPEG series, JPEG, MP3. You will also learn about Voice over IP (technology used in Skype), IPTV (technology used in Sing Tel’s mio TV), wireless technologies (e.g. WiFi, Bluetooth, RFID), and various generations of mobile communication networks (2G, 3G, 4G).
Wireless Communication & Security Option
Under this option, you will take two modules related to wireless communications, and two other modules related to network security. You will learn various wireless technologies used for transmission of data, including WiFi, Bluetooth, RFID, WiMAX, and UWB. Various generations (2G to 4G) of mobile communication networks are also covered, explaining the evolution of the cellular networks technologies and the fundamentals of cellular network design.
The network security modules prepare you to appreciate the security concerns in Infocomm deployment. You will learn about data encryption technologies, authentication systems, wireless network security, and configuration of routers and firewall device for protection of communication networks.
Internet & Security Option
You will acquire knowledge and skills to develop web services for new avenues of business, such as Internet appliance and electronic information. You will learn about web server (e.g. Microsoft’s IIS or Apache server) installation, operation, monitoring and management. The modules will discuss server hardware and software, security, backup and other administration issues. To protect your server and network, you will learn the firewall technologies and configuration of security devices. You will also learn about data encryption, authentication systems, and wireless network security.
DIPLOMA-PLUS PROGRAMMES
You may also register in one of the seven exciting Diploma-Plus Programmes, which will enhance your market value as a DICD graduate. Some of these programmes will help you to prepare you for certification.
