This option equips students with the know-how of design and system integration in machines. Students will learn basic principles in the design of machine elements and apply them effectively to material selection, human-machine interfacing and programming.
Precision Engineering is the key engine in Singapore's high-end manufacturing sector. It not only drives diverse industries in aerospace, oil & gas, medical devices and electronics, but also has spawned a myriad of SME support services. This option equips students with knowledge and skill sets in the design of machine components, tooling and process planning. The acquired know-how is highly sought after in precision manufacturing.
The current trend in managing energy consumption is increasing device efficiency and tapping on reliable sources. This option equips students with in-depth technical knowledge that gives them an edge over others when pursuing further studies, especially in related fields like refrigeration, air-conditioning and renewable energy. Many applications can be found at theme parks, hotels, convention centres, commercial buildings, pharmaceuticals plants and wafer fabrication. Good career opportunities include facilities management, engineering sales, design and maintenance.
Singapore is known globally as an aviation hub. It has the best international airport terminals and is a one-stop solution provider for a full range of maintenance, repair and overhaul services. This option teaches the fundamentals of flight and aircraft systems, reinforcing lessons with practical applications. Training facilities include not only an in-house built full-motion flight simulator system but also an impressive fleet of aircraft for hands-on learning. Students have the opportunity to be involved in related research and development projects.
Reliable facilities are vital to any public or commercial building. This option emphasizes the importance of running and maintaining them well in hospitals, hotels, resorts and public amenities. Applications include amusement parks, plumbing, sanitation, transportation, swimming pools, spas, water treatment, waste management, green cleaning, air-conditioning and ventilation. Key standards of practice in maintenance management are emphasized.
Product development cycles are getting shorter as technology pushes current boundaries relentlessly. Good designers think creatively at conceptualizing and choose responsibly for safe disposal after use. This option equips students with skills ranging from research and visualisation tools to eliciting emotional connection and product loyalty. A strong foundation in design sciences is developed through assignments involving ergonomics, human dimensions and impact on the socio-economic environment.
We are the only DME course applying Design Thinking methodology to MIT's CDIO framework. Students apply a holistic approach to the Conceive, Design, Implement and Operation stages of their final-year project. This unique ability to 'design the original and rethink the conventional' has launched numerous outstanding engineering careers with statutory boards, MNCs and SMEs.

Mechanical Engineering has enabled me to grasp the working principles of home appliances such as the refrigerator, industrial machines like the turbine, and personal gadgetry as common as the smart phone.
