What is this course about?
This one-year programme is targeted at shipping and logistics personnel with a polytechnic diploma or higher qualifications. It aims to give participants a greater level of understanding in shipping operations and shipping management. Junior and middle management executives who complete this diploma will be able to perform their jobs with a greater level of competence and understanding.
Suitable for
Maritime and maritime logistics executives and higher, currently working in the shipping industry but do not possess maritime qualifications or relevant sea-going experience. This Specialist Diploma would also be suitable for maritime executives who possess the requisite maritime qualifications but are keen to enhance and/or upgrade their existing knowledge and skills.
The course could also be suitable for professionals in other relevant fields such as Engineering, IT and/or the services industry, keen to switch to a career in the maritime industry and to maritime consultants and/or nautical/engineering sea going junior officers who may be keen to supplement their technical and/or navigational skills with commercial and shore based operational knowledge so as to prepare for a shore-based career in the local maritime industry.
Typical participants would be from shipping companies, ship-management companies, ship agencies, chartering and brokering companies, offshore, naval architecture services providers, maritime IT companies and maritime service providers such as surveying and maritime consulting companies.
Entry Requirements
Applicants with the following qualifications from a recognised Institution may be considered:
* Polytechnic Diploma in any discipline, or
* Degree in any discipline, or
* Deck/Marine Engineer Officer Class 1 Certificate of Competency
Non-Singaporeans must be working in Singapore and possess a valid Employment Pass / Work Permit / Dependant’s Pass throughout the course duration. They would need to bear the full risk of non-completion should their pass expire and subsequently lapse within the duration of the course.
Applicant must NOT be a student in any other Full-Time or Part-Time course when the term commences.
* Foreign qualifications will be assessed on a case by case basis.
Funding Incentives
With effect from 1 April 2011, Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents will pay 15% and 40% of the course fees respectively (subject to revision). Singapore Citizens who pursue subsequent Advanced or Specialist Diploma course will pay 30% of the course fees, provided that five years or more have lapsed since they completed and graduated from their previous Advanced or Specialist Diploma programmes.
The subsidy is only for normal course duration. Extra semesters taken (e.g. due to transfer, repeat, re-enrolment) would be charged full fees.

Participants are required to take their 5 CORE modules in Semester 1 and 6 Elective modules in Semester 2. For Semester 1, the classes are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. For semester 2, the classes are scheduled every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening from 6:00pm to 10:00 pm. Depending on which modules the participant had chosen, he/she may be required to attend a maximum of three evening classes per week.
Mode of Assessment
Modules will be assessed by in-course assignments, class tests, and web-based electronic assessments.

Graduates of this programme are well-recognised by MNCs for their transportation management capabilities and their broad understanding of transboundary movement of goods.
Today, the Singapore marine industry has an annual turnover of about $4 billion excluding sales from members' overseas operations. The industry is a significant employer of some 34,000 workers in Singapore. Singapore is well-recognised as the leading marine support centre and a convenient one-stop centre for ship owners, managers and agents. The breadth and depth of the ancillary services available in Singapore would mean more new jobs every year, especially for executives and professionals.
Certification
Participants will be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Shipping Operations and Management if they meet the 75% attendance rate as well as passing all assessments required by the course.

Forward the photocopies of the following supporting documents to the Admissions Office within one week after the submission of the online application. Otherwise, your application will be invalidated.
a. Education certificate of Degree and/or Diploma b. Academic transcripts for Degree and/or Diploma (except SP, NP, TP, NYP and RP) c. NRIC for Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and Malaysians d. Passport for non-Singaporeans e. Employment Pass/Work Permit for non-Singaporeans f. Birth Certificate, if you are below 21 g. Document proof (eg. Deed Poll, Marriage Cert) if your name in the NRIC/Passport is different from the educational documents.
