Why Diploma in Applied Chemistry with Pharmaceutical Science @
Singapore Polytechnic?
Singapore Polytechnic is the only institution of higher learning in the country to offer the Diploma in Applied Chemistry with Pharmaceutical Science (DACP), formerly called Chemical Process Technology. It is a three-year full-time modular programme with third-year options in Medicinal Chemistry Research and Industrial Chemistry that allow students to specialise in their areas of interest. This course will allow students to innovate and create new ideas related to the chemical and biomedical industries.
The chemical industry in Singapore is a high-growth area, highly diversified and spans wide areas such as petroleum refining and petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, environment management, water and waste treatment and display technology. There is a wide demand for skilled personnel in these areas.
Another key area of growth in Singapore is the biomedical sciences and the industry's manufacturing output has been increasing rapidly. This growth is likely to increase further as Singapore is the host to 10 global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies with their regional headquarters established here to drive their business expansion and innovation in Asia.
Accompanying both these growth areas is an increasing demand for a pool of highly qualified diploma graduates trained in both the chemical and biomedical sciences. The DACP course curriculum has been customised to address this demand.
Concepts and theories learned in lectures and tutorials are reinforced with an extensive practical programme. Local and overseas industrial attachments at companies or universities provide opportunities to gain relevant working or research experience.
Students in the Medicinal Chemistry Research option will experience dedicated research work with industry partners or university professors for their final year project. On the other hand, the Industrial Chemistry option allows students to select elective modules of their choice in applied chemistry for further advancement in their future studies and careers.
Besides training in the most-up-to-date technologies, students will also enjoy modern teaching facilities outfitted with sophisticated equipment. We have a new suite of Pharmaceutical and Organic Chemistry Laboratories which provide drug formulation, synthesis and testing. Our Analytical and Forensic Chemistry Laboratories house advanced analytical instruments while the Green Chemistry Laboratory has a wide-range of environmental monitoring capabilities. Other setups include the Advanced Materials Technology Centre, which provides clean room facilities for the manufacture of liquid crystal displays and solar panels.
