School of Chemical & Life Sciences

Overview

Singapore is a global hub for materials production and innovation. For just the first half of 2010, manufacturing out expanded 41.6%. The materials and chemical industry is poised for further growth as more world-scale chemical plants and R&D facilities come on stream. Developments across many sectors drive the demand for advanced and specialty materials.

A Head Start

The Diploma in Materials Science (DMLS) aims to equip ‘next generation’ graduates with materials science knowledge relevant to this rapidly evolving environment. A distinctive feature of the diploma will be the inclusion of management skills training that will allow graduates to fully participate in and benefit from exciting industry developments. This new diploma is built on the solid heritage of the Diploma in Chemical Process (Polymer) Technology course, a course that has been widely recognised, locally and overseas, for its academic excellence and industrial relevance.

Practical Training

We take pride in the extensive laboratory practicals and experiential learning of Materials. We have a wide range of modern and sophisticated equipment housed in the Polymer Characterisation Centre, Polymer Chemistry Laboratory, Polymer Processing Laboratory, Materials Science Laboratory as well as the Advanced Materials Technology Centre. We offer both local and overseas industrial attachment opportunities. We have many interesting and challenging industry-based Final Year Projects. These projects will provide you with real working or research experience.

Career Opportunities and Further Education

Students who wish to further their studies can apply to the local and also many overseas universities. They will gain a flying start if they enrol for a two-year part-time advanced diploma programme which gives advanced standing to a one-year master’s degree programme with Loughborough University in UK.

Science that matters

"Life as a DMLS student is really enriching as compared to life when I was a secondary school student. I took up on leadership positions and these are some things that I was not exposed to in secondary school. Rather than being a participant or helper, I was given opportunities to become the organiser for certain events and I am really grateful for these opportunities.

In this short period of about two years in serving the DMLS community as a part of the DMLS Student Chapter, I have definitely gained a lot of experiences and exposure and I definitely hope that the lives of future DMLS students will be as, if not more, enriching."
