Role of the Business Advisory Council (BAC)


The Business Advisory Council (BAC) is formed to promote Entrepreneurship development in SP as well as providing advice to start-ups. The council comprise of members from both academic and administrative departments. From time to time, BAC will co-opt Entrepreneurs from SP Entrepreneurship Club (SPEC) and business leaders from the industry to evaluate the business proposals.

Mr Kelvin Tan: Director, Bayswater Shipping & Forwarding Pte Ltd (SMA, SP Alumnus 1982) 
Ms Joanne Tee: Current Entrepreneur & Former Director of Sales of Oracle Corporation

Mr Daniel Tan Yong Nam: Exective Manager, PWG Asia (SP Alumnus)

Mr Nick Sim: Co-Founder, WhizHeartz (SP Alumnus)

Mr David Lee: Principal Trainer, Luminaries Lab


Mr Song Nay Hay
Chairman, Business Advisory Council

Song graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) from the University of Waterloo Lutheran in Ontario, Canada. He also has a Masters degree in Business Systems Analysis & Design from the City University, UK. He joined Singapore Polytechnic in 1981, as lecturer in the Japan-Singapore Institute of Software Technololgy.


Song has lectured in various education institutions in Australia, UK and helped set up the Examinations System in Mauritius Polytechnic. He has an in-depth knowledge of IT education at the tertiary level and sought to position SP's SMIT as the eduation hub in IT training. Mr Song is currently a member of the PSB Academic Board, Media Development Authority's Interactive and Digital Media Centre (IDMC) Expert Panel. He is also a senior member of the Singapore Computer Society.

Mr V Maheantharan
Director, PACE


Maheantharan obtained his B.Sc(Hons) fom the University of Southampton in 1980,subsequently he completed his LL.B.(Hons) with the University of London and the LL.M. with the University of Southampton.


Maheantharan joined Singapore Polytechnic in 1982 and was with the then Department of Nautical Studies and was transferred to School of Business in 1986 which he helped to establish. He is keen on issues relating to academic management, student learning and also matters relating to commercial law. He contributes to the Singapore Heart Foundation,the Speak Good English Movement,the Indian Programme Advisory Committee MDA .He is also a mediator with the Small Claims Tribunal.

Mr John Yap
Consultant, Department of Industry Services


John Yap graduated from University of Melbourne, Australia, with Bachelor of Electrical Engineering in 1969. He worked in various Multinational Corporations specialised in production, quality control and regional sales & marketing for 16 years before joining Singapore Polytechnic in 1988.


John Yap had been almost 20 years in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and was former Deputy Director in Department of Industry Services before retired in 2008.


Mr John Foo
Manager (Teaching & Learning), School of Business


John Foo graduated from Louisiana State University, U.S.A., with a Master of Science degree in Strategic Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance (Cum Laude). In addition, he has a Teaching Certificate (Distinction) specialising in Mathematics from the Maktab Perguruan Persekutuan Pulau Pinang, Malaysia, and
the Advanced Certificate in Teaching from Singapore Polytechnic-Sheffield
University.


John Foo joined Singapore Polytechnic in 1990, he had several years of experience as a business development executive specialising in corporate planning and
business development with a major corporation in Malaysia.


Mr Arthur Poh
Director, Department of Student Development


Arthur Poh is the Director, Department of Student Development (DSD). His responsibilities include entrepreneurship development, intellectual property (IP) management, consultancy and industry partnerships. Prior to joining SP, he was a litigation lawyer with some of the leading law firms in Singapore, with a focus on helping new start-ups with corporate law and IP matters.
 
Arthur Poh graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with both a Bachelor and Master of Laws degrees. In 2007, he was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law (with Distinction) from NUS and IP Academy. In his free time, he serves as a volunteer at the Probation Services Branch, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and the Sports and a mediator with the Community Mediation Centre, Ministry of Law.


Meeting with the Business Advisory Council

The Business Advisory Council meets every last Thursday of the month to evaluate application from YES! Startup and SPICES. Should that day falls on a public holiday, please contact us to arrange for next meeting.
