Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) For Secondary School Students

In Feb 2006, as part of a changing educational landscape that calls for greater diversity and flexibility in education, the Polytechnic-School Review Committee (PSRC) appointed by the Minister for Education, gave the following recommendations which were accepted by the MOE:

  • Greater curriculum flexibility and choice by introducing more applied modules as enrichment in the upper secondary curriculum. These Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) will be introduced from Jan 2007;

  • Introduction of more Applied Subjects students can take in lieu of existing 'O' level subjects (with effect from 2008);

  • Recognition of student achievements and talent beyond the academic areas and broadening of measures of success by introducing the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) Exercise similar to the Direct School Admission system already available for entry to secondary schools and junior colleges. The DPA exercise is targeted to open in mid-Jun 2007 for admission in 2008 Jan for a special 10-week preparatory programme prior to the start of the academic session.
