The Common Foundation Programme amalgamates the 3 built environment design diplomas- namely, Diploma in Architecture, Diploma in Interior Design and Diploma in Landscape Architecture, into a cohesive common Year 1 programme. The programme aims to provide an opportunity for students to experience the rich fundamentals of an industry-centric and explorative curriculum. This engenders a holistic preparation and foundation for an exciting, challenging and enriching career in the built environment. Students will study an array of topics including Design Fundamentals and Techniques, Technology and Sustainability Fundamentals as well as Design Representation. These core fundamentals will build up their foundational knowledge and skills that are relevant to their area of practice. Students will be guided by lecturers with industry experience as well as current practitioners through a rigorous studio-based, explorative, highly challenging and self-directed learning experience. This will develop the core skills needed to enrich their academic abilities in their respective diplomas.

This profession will expose you to skills and knowledge across different fields. From design and craft, social sciences to business considerations, material finishes, costing to project management. Partner specialists and consultants, ranging from architects, engineers, business owners, clients to contractors to realise your design.

As an interior designer, each project you take on will be engaging and challenging. It will stretch your creativity, technical skills, passion and commitment as you place your professional judgment to create a unique and creative solution for your client. Interior designing is an active and engaging profession that never has a dull moment. Being a catalyst of positive change will offer you a profession filled with satisfaction and pride as you see your designs being built, coming to life and enhancing the lives of others.



Why DID@SP?

The Diploma in Interior Design (DID) balances both technical and design competencies as the course focuses on both physical and digital spatial experimentation, curating experiences and journeys for users through space, form, materials, colour and light.

In our studio culture, you will be trained in different design methods to realise dynamic and meaningful designs. From research techniques in Design Thinking and User Experience (UX). To ideation and making using both traditional prototyping and digital fabrication processes, as well as harness the power of technology through Building Information Modelling (BIM) and parametric design. To material and finishes selection and lighting design to create attractive ambiences and moods for your spaces.

As you partner contractors/builders to realise your design, learn industry standards and conventions for design and technical drawings, as well as communication skills to visually and verbally communicate your exciting designs.

Through a hands-on studio approach, exploratory projects, supported with out-of-classroom learning and exposure to industry projects, our course prepares students to be ready for the design industry, equipping graduates with relevant design knowledge and future forward skills.

Global trends shaping the industry and the course

In the most recent Built Environment Industry Transformation Roadmap, as a response to challenges from arising from digital revolution, rapid urbanisation and climate change, the three ways that the industry hopes to transform itself are to ‘Build Smart, Efficiently & Green’.

Singapore’s construction demand is expected to remain strong with larger and more complex projects such as Changi Airport Terminal 5, Jurong Region and Cross Island MRT lines coming up. With stable and sustained growth in construction demand over the next few years, there is a huge and growing demand for interior designers in related industries. Interior designers have a role to play in homes, offices, commercial entities, Food & Beverage outlets, hospitality (hotels) to civic spaces such as museums, libraries and exhibitions.

The curriculum at DID will equip you with the skillsets that are aligned with the Construction Industry Transformation Map. Join us in our fully immersive design culture, incorporating a rigorous curriculum from exploratory projects to collaborations with industry and institutions.
