Study Trip to London During Singapore Day 2018 Leaves Lasting Impression

16 May 2018

Twelve Diploma in Integrated Events & Project Management (DEPM) & three Diploma in Visual Effects & Motion Graphics (DVEMG) students along with two lecturers James Christian Sethmohan and Ramasamy Rajesree embarked on a study tour to coincide with the Singapore Day event held in London on 24th March 2018.

Singapore Day is an event organised by the Overseas Singaporean Unit under the Ministry of Culture, Communication and Youth to engage Overseas Singaporeans and their families. Held in cities with a significant community of Overseas Singaporeans, it is a single-day annual event designed to give Singaporeans a "slice of home while overseas" through food, performances and exhibits.

The team was hosted at the event by Radius Group – the appointed official service provider and partner of Singapore Day 2018.

Students and staff had the opportunity to sit-in at pre-event presentations by Radius in Singapore and follow through in London with site-tours during the pre-event set-up. The students were also able to be involved and get practical hands-on experience from the organisers on how over 5,000 guests were registered and ushered in, volunteers were managed, interactive exhibition elements incorporated and photography / videography requirements met on-site during the event.

This exposure proved to be an eye-opener for students to gain an understanding of the working culture of how large events are conducted in the second most visited city in the world – London* (Euromonitor International, 2017)

Another highlight of the trip was that the students had the chance to interact with many Overseas Singaporeans studying in London who had volunteered their services alongside them at the event, observe local service providers working at the event and speak to many of the Overseas Singaporeans from London and Europe who had come for the event.

Amidst the hard work, the group also made time to explore the sights and sounds of London. They went on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter to observe how breath-taking sets, authentic props and original costumes from the movie franchise had been exhibited to provide an interactive experience to visitors.

And took a London By Night Guided Tour on an open top bus that whizzed pass landmarks such as the lavish Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral and Big Ben.

As a whole, the experience was valuable and memorable - from the warm hospitality of the host partner to the wide variety of excitement London offered.

The study trip from 20 – 26 March provided the team industrial, social, cultural and exposure in an overseas environment forging closer ties and lasting friendships along the way.

We are grateful to Radius Group for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and exposure working alongside with their entire team from beginning to the end. We are also thankful for the trust and faith they have placed on us in this wonderful experience.
