19 Aug 2019
Diploma Civil Engineering with Business (DCEB) Students Winning The 3rd Prize of $4000 and Trophy in Tertiary Institution Category @ Green Wave National Competition at Marina Mandarin, Singapore on 22nd May 2019.
Green Wave competition is an annual national competition organised by Sembcorp Marine. The competition encourages students to address a broad spectrum of environmental awareness and creative sustainability solutions among young people in Southeast Asia. The annual competition – now in its 16th run - gives students practical learning opportunities, such as taking a hands-on approach to creating solutions for the environment.
In this year’s competition, close to 1,000 local and regional students submitted 281 projects. Representing Singapore Polytechnic, four DCEB students (Chua Hui Qing, Ingin May, Tan Zi Ling, Clivon Heng Shih Han) were awarded the 3rd Prize of S$4,000 and a trophy for their project titled “Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) - Free Anti Corrosion Coatings for Maritime Applications”. Heavy duty protective coating is a major approach to anti-corrosion for maritime industry. However current anti-corrosion coatings are mostly solvent based with different levels of VOCs. They can cause potential health and environmental hazards. This project aims to develop VOCs-free coatings for tropical maritime anti-corrosion applications. The end product will reduce environmental impact, provide excellent anti-corrosion protection and offer good adhesion to substrates. These will help to achieve longer service life. This project was supervised by Dr Handojo Djati Utomo (DCEB Lecturer) and Dr Zhen Yongda from Advanced Material Technology Centre (AMTC Research Scientist) and forms part of several collaboration DCEB has with AMTC in innovating materials for use in the built environment.
All four students in the winning team have all recently graduated and are pursuing their interest in Civil Engineering both in the workforce and tertiary education. Currently, Chua Hui Qing is pursuing a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering at National University of Singapore and Tan Zi Ling is working as a Site Engineer at Dragages Singapore. ABE is proud of their achievement and wishes them all the best in their future endeavours.
