IDEERS is an international competition catering to the design and construction of earthquake resistant building models using cheap materials such as MDF (medium density fibre) boards, glues, rubber bands, papers and cotton strings. All the models are about 0.7 metre tall.

IDEERS, held since 2001, aims to generate students’ interest in the field of structural engineering and disaster mitigation. In 2006, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) approved and recognized IDEERS as one of the prestigious educational events that it supports. The event was hence renamed as APEC-IDEERS and held by the National Centre for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in Taipei, Taiwan and jointly organized by British Council, Asia-Pacific Network of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research (ANCER), National Applied Research Laboratories (NARL), and National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR).

This year, the undergraduate category of IDEERS 2018 drew 49 teams, which included top universities from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Australia, etc.

A team, consisting of four students from Diploma in Civil Engineering (DCEB) course, namely Lee Chee Wai (team leader), William, Chen Jian Xiong and Candice Lum Hui Mei, led by Dr Tao Nengfu, senior lecturer from the School of Architecture and the Built Environment, won the 2nd prize under the Undergraduate Category. The team also won the Design-Concept Exhibition Award as well as the Earthquake Resistant Award.
