Turning Urban Dwellings into Green Dreams

If you’ve ever admired the thoughtfully designed green spaces in one of Singapore’s HDB estates, you might be looking at Rachel Koh’s work. Her journey into landscape architecture began at SP, which has played a pivotal role in shaping her career.

Sowing the Seeds of Inspiration

Rachel’s interest in landscape architecture was sparked by an unexpected source—a TV programme featuring an arborist working with trees. The idea of working with plants as a career led her to pursue a Diploma in Landscape Architecture at SP in 2007.

She recalls that her time at SP was filled with projects that gave her a glimpse into challenges faced in the real world.

“One of the projects that left a deep impression was when we had to design a rooftop garden. The small space made it quite challenging, so we had to prioritise what was truly fitting and important.”

These experiences taught her to solve problems and make decisions effectively, both important skills that would guide her professionally.

Nurturing Growth

SP also taught Rachel valuable life lessons, like learning to embrace the unexpected. This adaptability has been a key element in Rachel’s approach to design and project management throughout her career.

“The course was different from what I initially imagined, but it taught me that passions and interests can evolve in surprising ways.”

One of the most important lessons Rachel took away from SP was learning to navigate the subjective nature of design. This ability was crucial in her work with clients, architects and engineers later in her career.

“I learned to value multiple perspectives. In creative fields, there are often many solutions and possibilities, and that’s something SP helped me understand.”

Laying the Foundation

After graduating from SP, Rachel joined the workforce, starting as a Landscape Architectural Assistant at Envirospace Consultants, before moving on to DLQ Design, where she took on more responsibilities.

“The coursework at SP set the foundation for me. It gave me the skills and knowledge needed to enter the industry with confidence.”

Branching Out

Rachel also recognised the importance of further education, and in 2012, she decided to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Architecture at RMIT University in Australia, which marked a significant period of personal and professional growth.

“While SP provided a solid foundation, I wanted to gain more in-depth knowledge and advanced skills. Studying at RMIT gave me an opportunity to learn about international practices and approaches in landscape architecture.”

The culture of inquiry and critical thinking she had begun to develop at SP was further nurtured at RMIT. This emphasis on questioning fostered dialogue as a meaningful way to learn.

“The tutors encouraged us to embrace curiosity and not fear asking questions, and I learned that questioning is an important tool for learning.”

Shaping Singapore’s Green Spaces

Today, as a Senior Landscape Architect at HDB, Rachel’s work goes far beyond simply designing aesthetically pleasing spaces.

“Landscape architecture is a multifaceted discipline. At HDB, we create spaces that are not only beautiful, but also address critical environmental issues, such as managing stormwater runoff and urban heat island effect, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting well-being through thoughtful design.”

One of her most fulfilling roles is being able to contribute to the policies that shape community spaces across HDB estates. These outdoor spaces, such as playground and fitness areas, serve as places where residents meet, connect with nature and create lasting memories.

“For example, when proposing new playgrounds, we work with consultants to ensure that the designs meet our guidelines. It’s not just about having something for kids to play on, but making sure those spaces encourage development and community interaction.”

Remembering her Roots

Rachel is thankful for her time at SP. Beyond the technical knowledge, SP also helped her develop essential soft skills, such as communication and teamwork, which have been critical to her professional success.

“Looking ahead, I hope to further influence sustainable landscape policies and contribute to studies and research on the intersection between landscape architecture, urban ecology, and public health.”

To future SP graduates, Rachel has some simple, but wise advice: “Develop your soft skills, like communication and teamwork. Stay receptive to new ideas and experiences. Being flexible in your thinking can lead to unexpected opportunities and growth. Continuous learning will enhance our adaptability while also sharpening our skills and fostering our own personal growth.”
