Talent pipeline for energy and chemicals sector

The Straits Times, 23 August 2016 - SP and the Singapore Workforce Development Agency have launched a 18-month earn and learn programme (ELP) for the energy and chemicals sector. The ELP is open to those who have graduated from selected polytechnic courses. Those who graduate from the ELP will be exempted from selected modules if they later pursue a related degree at the National University of Singapore or the Singapore Institute of Technology-Newcastle University. The new programme which has signed up 26 participants in the inaugural batch will see participants attending lessons at SP, get trained on the job and be mentored by their employers. They will be paid a starting base salary of $1,400 to $2,000 a month with a shift allowance of $800 to $1,100. SP’s Diploma in Chemical Engineering (DCHE) graduate from the class of 2016, Masyitah Hasunah, shared that gaining work experience was a key factor in her decision to sign up for the ELP. Acting Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung, who launched the ELP at Pulau Bukom reiterated the importance of the SkillsFuture movement in light of major technological disruptions happening in the world.
