The DISM course has provided me with a holistic approach towards cyber security, and a plethora of opportunities - both within the institution and out in society - to explore and advance my technical arsenal beyond the syllabus and develop essential soft skills. With DISM what began as “something cool” to study after secondary school turned into a career with high potential. I learnt from excellent lecturers and they made use of handson learning to help me better understand the many facets of information security. Through opportunities such as internships, certifications and competitions, I also gained valuable insights of the cyber security industry. It is an industry that is constantly evolving and I am glad that SP has prepared me well for it.

The School of Computing's foundational curricula provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the technical aspects of cybersecurity, including topics such as network security, cryptography, and ethical hacking. With hands-on projects and practical coursework, I gained practical skills in vulnerability assessment, incident response, and security management. There was also emphasis on the development of non-technical skillsets such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, which are crucial in the cybersecurity industry. The Polytechnic Technology Programme, which offered opportunities for internships with leading organisations such as GovTech, allowed me to apply my knowledge in real-world scenarios and make a meaningful impact in the field of cybersecurity. The School’s holistic approach to education empowered me to deepen my interest and passion in technology and equipped me with the skills needed to excel in the cybersecurity industry.

SoC gave me an opportunity to explore my interest in cybersecurity from different aspects—coding with security in mind, ethical hacking, digital forensics and even IT audit. Although I joined the diploma course with little knowledge on cybersecurity and IT in general, I was able to absorb the concepts in school quickly with the help of my lecturers and peers. Through my internship, I have learnt that my passion lies in audit work and I intend to continue working in IT audit in the future too.
