24 Sep 2021

EEE’s internship students, Nicholas and Yixuan, under the supervision of Dr Arun Kumar, have emerged as Champions for the ‘Tertiary category’ in the SCS Splash Awards 2021 for their project ‘Engaging Rehabilitation - Music Technology Activity Games (M-TAG)’.

Organised by the Singapore Computer Society, the Splash Awards is a national student tech innovation competition that challenges minds and inspire innovative solutions for Infocomm in a fun and creative way. It is developed to give students experience in solving real life challenges and to prepare them for the industry, to encourage innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship through application development.  This year’s theme was, “How will Digital Intelligence & Cloud transform Singapore in a Post-Pandemic World?”. Teams went through two stages of selection.  In the Tertiary Category, 22 Teams were shortlisted for Stage A, out of which, 6 Teams proceeded to Stage B i.e. the Final Rounds held on 24 September 2021.

During the Virtual Award Ceremony officiated by the Guest of Honour, Minister of State Mr. Tan Kiat How, each student received an Apple Macbook Air for their achievement.

M-TAG brings Virtual-Reality music games to the homes of paediatric patients, who are undergoing upper limb rehabilitation, during and post Covid. The setup makes use of a leap motion controller unit (for contactless upper limbs movement detection) to play interactive games developed using Unity software with C# programming. The setup also enables therapist to seamlessly track a patient’s progress securely via real-time data stored on the Decada and Huawei cloud. M-TAG was developed based on valuable feedback from our collaborators who are Music Therapists at KKH.  Moving forward, M TAG has also been invited to participate in the International ICT Innovative Services Awards (InnoServe Awards) on 6 November 2021 organised by Taipei Computer Association.
