SP Alumnus, Lee Kok Kin, Leading Singapore’s Sustainability Efforts

Lee Kok Kin

During his secondary school days, Kok Kin’s interest in physics ignited his passion for engineering. With a preference for a hands-on practical learning experience, he applied to SP to further his tertiary education. It was also a no-brainer for Kok Kin, who lived near the campus, as he could attend his lectures and tutorials on time.

SP offered a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skillsets that developed a logical mindset in this enterprising engineer. After National Service, Kok Kin secured a position as a technical officer in the Singapore Power Group. Throughout a glittering career that spanned two decades (2000 – 2020), Kok Kin steadily climbed the corporate ranks and oversaw many key sustainability projects.

Kok Kin fondly remembers his SP days and credits the school for imbuing him with the life skills for success. When the opportunity came to contribute to his alma mater, he did not hesitate to lend a helping hand.

In 2015, Kok Kin and his team inked a five-year $1 million sponsorship to support SP’s participation in the biennial World Solar Challenge in 2015, 2017 and 2019. The generous sponsorship empowered engineering students to design and build a few SunSPEC advanced solar cars to take part in the competition, which is considered one of the world’s most challenging and competitive solar car races. SP participated alongside numerous established and reputable global universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

With Kok Kin’s appointment as CEO of Sembwaste, this extends SP’s already strong partnership with Sembcorp to support the long-term growth of solar energy in Singapore through R&D projects and training. This includes the setting up of a pilot scale photovoltaic (PV) recycling plant, on SP campus, for solar panels to demonstrate its commercial viability prior to industry adoption. There is also a solar PV joint lab for R&D project development and training, to help build up Singapore’s capabilities in solar PV technologies and strengthen our solar energy talent pool.

Kok Kin advocates engineering as a fulfilling career choice if one believes in hard work and create value to help the community. SP is proud of Kok Kin, and we look forward to witnessing more of his achievements and contributions to the fields of sustainability and environmental conservation.
