To Elyn See Kailin, the world is her oyster where she could avail herself of the tremendous opportunities it brings.
Little wonder that during her 3 year study of the Diploma in Engineering with Business (DEB) course, she had emerged the epitome of excellence in every way. Not only was she consistently ranked among the top 5% of her cohort, culminating in
the award of the ExxonMobil Gold Medal in her final year, she was also the winner of the coveted Lee Kuan Yew Award, an institutional award which only few students in Singapore Polytechnic are conferred the honour of receiving each year.
Though an engineer at heart with interests leaning towards mathematics, data science and artificial intelligence, user experience and interface design, Elyn is also an ardent practitioner of the dance arts, having participated in several Singapore
and international dance competitions and clinched many awards for her performance. As a student, she was hungry for learning opportunities which would help her develop holistically. Hence, she participated widely in seminars, forums,
dialogue sessions, conferences and camps to harness ideas and hone her leadership, business, mentoring, perspectives and soft skills. She used those skills to much advantage in her various leadership capacities. For example, as Co-President
of the “Institute of Engineers-Singapore Polytechnic (IES-SP) Student Chapter,” she was able to motivate her team members to work on IES-related activities with good outcomes. Under her leadership, IES-SP Student Chapter had the highest
number of IES student members among the polytechnics. As chairperson of the Student FOP 2019 Committee, she was able to organise and deploy student helpers for the freshmen events resulting in a well-run FOP 2019 that received widely positive
feedback from the freshmen.
True to her care and compassionate nature, Elyn would take time to reach out to the less privileged in the community. She volunteered at helping underprivileged children with their studies at a night care programme under the Morning Star Community
Services and delivering food bundles to the underprivileged families under The Food Bank Singapore. She initiated projects like Scratch Programming Classes for underprivileged children at Morning Star and a Creative Writing Workshop for
primary school students from rental flats to teach them useful skills. She even started the SP Food Wastage Project with her friends to challenge her peers in reducing food wastage on campus. She also helped out at the Tanjong Pagar GRC’s
Meet-the-People Sessions to better understand and connect with members of the community in need.
Elyn was no stranger to competitions. In fact, she embraced the challenges they presented with energy and enthusiasm. Elyn was part of the team that won the prestigious “Lee Hsien Loong Interactive Digital Media Smart Nation Award
2019” for the project, “Smart Volatile Organic Compound Gas Monitoring System with IoT Solution.” She was also part of another team that took part in “GeekOut!,” a tech engineering boot-camp organised by GovTech,
and won the champion prize.
Elyn had the privilege of receiving scholarship offers from PSC and Changi Airport Group, both presenting opportunities for her to serve the nation. She chose the latter as she felt that it would bring her closer to her dream of enhancing the
Changi Experience for both tourists and locals alike. Elyn plans to further her study in Computer Science in the United Kingdom. For her, the sky would be the limit, and the world, an oyster with which she would open with her drive, enthusiasm
and creativity.
