DEB student Won Prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship 2021

30 Jul 2021

DEB year one student, Bryan Chia Ming Yang, has been awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship To Encourage Upgrading (LKY STEP) 2021.

Synonymous with both prestige and a willingness to serve Singapore, the LKY STEP Scholarship marks Singapore's continuous effort to recognise outstanding individuals with the aptitude and inclination to contribute to our society. It was set up in 1991 by the Tanjong Pagar Citizens’ Consultative Committee with funding from the public to commemorate the contributions made by Mr Lee Kuan Yew to Singapore.

Bryan bears the marks of a responsible and engaged citizenry.  A member of the Sembawang Youth Network, he enjoys helping the community and those in need. In the words of his Personal Tutor, he is a “very responsible assistant class rep and always caring for his classmates.”

A graduate from Higher NITEC with GPA 4.0, Byran chose to study at Singapore Polytechnic because of its facilities and opportunities given to the students.  He was attracted to the DEB course as it promises him the best of both worlds – learning the fundamental knowledge and skills in the fields of electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering, and also how to apply business and marketing concepts to engineering products and services.  In fact, he has this to share with ITE students contemplating taking SP’s DEB course:

”If you are interested in technology and would like to improve the world with your ideas, DEB at SP is the course for you as it gives you many opportunities as it is an integration of engineering and business knowledge with a strong focus on technopreneurship.”

The course’s multi-disciplinary feature allows him to have more course choices to choose from when furthering his studies at a university. More importantly, in the larger scheme of things, the DEB course is a step towards achieving his dream of becoming a business-minded engineer with an entrepreneurial mindset.  DEB gives him many networking opportunities and support which will allow him a head start in his technopreneurship journey with help from successful EEE alumni and industry partners. Connections made during the networks could also enable him to jump start his career in future.
