EEE Students in GeekOut (Poly) 2020 Bootcamp cum Hackathon

09 Dec 2020

15 EEE students took part in GeekOut (Poly) 2020, a bootcamp cum hackathon organised by GovTech, Singapore.  Due to the current pandemic, this year’s event was held virtually from 12 to 14 October 2020.  Participants received a pleasant surprise in the form of a Welcome Pack sent by GovTech via courier, prior to the event, which included snacks and materials required for the bootcamp.  Over 3 days, participants gained insights on the different tech projects GovTech worked on, and had opportunities to network with their Senior Leaders.  Students also took part in virtual technical workshops that emphasized the important aspects of a good project, such as User Experience (covering Human-Centred Design Thinking) and Cybersecurity (covering basic network vulnerabilities).

Participants gave rave reviews on the experiences and sharing sessions conducted by GovTech’s engineers.  In one sharing session, for example, the engineers shared about how the SafeEntry and TraceTogether Apps were designed and implemented.  GeekOut (Poly) 2020 culminated with a hackathon where teams were challenged to generate new ideas and solutions in view of COVID-19’s new “normal”.  Despite the short duration, they were able to produce interesting prototypes that wowed the judges.  Teams comprising students from EEE and other schools won the top two prizes.
