The Meatless Meat Challenge (MMC) 2022

March 24, 2022

The Meatless Meat Challenge 2022 was officially launched on 4 March 2022 by Singapore Food Manufacturer’s Association (SFMA), Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and Food Innovation & Resource Centre (FIRC). With the aim to accelerate alternative meat protein options developed in Singapore and to help local food enterprises to stay ahead of the competitive industry, the MMC brings together 10 companies and 40 Singapore Polytechnic (SP) students to ideate, prototype and develop next innovative meatless meat products. The challenge spans across 6 months in 3 phases.

Phase 1, also known as Transdisciplinary Innovation Project (TIP), has successfully completed last Friday, 18 March 2022.  Approximately 80 people attended the concept pitching and showcase, which included valued industry partners and students.

The TIP programme is an intensive 10-day design sprint with students from different schools in SP to solve complex and real-world problems. With the food industry evolving rapidly, companies will now have to adopt a fast-tracking conceptualization and prototyping approach to adapt to changes. In 10 days, the student teams, under the guidance from the companies and supervisors, managed to analyse, identify, map, test and create some tangible and testable concept solutions. The top drivers identified for the meatless meat space include better taste, higher nutrition, more versatility, greater affordability and product localisation for Southeast Asia market.

The programme concluded with the showcase of the prototypes and marketing concepts. Organisers, valued industry partners were invited to tour the exhibition. There were a great deal of innovative and interesting ideas displayed!

As we move on to Phase 2, in which the concepts will be further refined and developed into actual food products, we look forward to more conversations with the participating food companies and students and to provide technical workshops with hands-on training to discover the next Made-in-Singapore meatless product. Check out this space for more exciting updates!

In appreciation of our partners, we wish to thank SFMA, ESG, Singapore Polytechnic Media, Arts and Design School and School of Chemical and Life Sciences for their strong support.
