2019 Events

PFP Freshman Orientation

8 April 2019 marks the day where the all PFP students embarks on their journey as a Singapore Polytechnic student – as this will be their second home for the next 4 years. The Orientation Week, dating from 8 to 12 April, was conducted to allow students to familiarise themselves with the school and the polytechnic environment. The PFP FOP was a three day event, and Flag Day was the last event held on 10 April 2019.

 

The students had games, briefings, meeting the school course chairs and their PFP personal tutors, and carry out community services by taking part in the annual Flag Day.

Class Leaders Engagement Session 1 

The Class Leader Engagement Session was conducted on 17 April 2019, an event where class leaders were invited to interact with one another and get updated of the upcoming development of PFP events.

Refreshments were provided for the event. The class leaders were excited over their new roles and shared many constructive suggestions on the many possible events that they could organize to provide multiple platforms for the PFP students to mingle and make friends.

ECG Talk Part 1

Education, Career and Guidance (ECG) counsellors from One Stop Center provided 2 talks to PFP students on 24 Apr and 8 May 2019. The talk focused on getting the students to start thinking about how they can plan their SP journey to achieve their career goals. Two ex-PFP alumni also came for the event to share their stories and gave the students some tips on what action they can take during their studies in PFP.

PFP Bonding Day 

On 15th May 2019, the first PFP Bonding Day for AY1920 cohort was held. The event was organized by the PFP Student Chapter, whom they collaborated with the class leaders from AY1920. The event was an opportunity for PFP students to mingle with one another from different classes, and for the class leaders to have the experience in organizing an event. The games required the use of Instagram to compete a series of task and the students had enjoyed themselves.

Meet the Parents Session

 

PFP Meet the Parents (MTP) Session for AY1920 cohort was held on 13 Jul 2019.

The programme included Director’s and Course Chair’s overview of PFP, LEAP Camp briefing for parents (conducted by DSA & camp vendor), presentation of PFP Study Awards and a highly interactive Q&A session via sli.do. Parents will also get the chance to interact with the personal tutors to find out more about the academic performance of their children.

Community Vigilance Workshop 

Community Vigilance workshop was held from 22 – 26 Jul 2019. A number of PFP students attended this workshop and learnt a number of lifesaving skills, such as CPR, the methods to bandage a wound and fractures, and etc.

Student Dialogue Session

The PFP Student Dialogue Session was conducted on 24 Jul 2019, which is a platform for students to interact with PFP Course Chair and the school director to provide feedback and exchange on matters relating to PFP. Interesting topics were highlighted during the session and students had a better understanding of PFP @ SP through this engagement.

Poly 50 2019

On the 24 July 2019, it was the day that all participants of the Poly50 event were all waiting for. Even though the training wasn’t as intense as most runners thought it would be, the students were glad that they had join this event as they get to meet other PFP students from different classes.

The whole objective of this event is to promote social cohesion, interaction among students and staff, and to promote fitness and inculcate the importance of regular exercise, as well as leading a healthy lifestyle. There were 2 teams formed by the PFP students and one of the team finished the race in 15th place.

PFP Leap Camp 2019

Leap camp was a life changing experience for the PFP students. The camp was held from 16 September to 18 September 2019, 3 days 2 night camp at focus adventure camp at Sentosa. JP01 to JP05 went on the first week while JP06 to JP10 went the week after and JP21 to JP25 went the day after the second batch came back from camp. Leap camp is part of Active and Effective Citizenry module, the camp provided the opportunities for the students to learn how to be a better team player and also be active and effective citizens of Singapore.

PFP SPORTS DAY 2019 

PFP held its very first Sports Day on 20 Nov 2019.

This event was made for PFP students to interact and bond with people from other classes through similar interest in sports. The different sports held were captain’s ball, street soccer and basketball. This event was made possible by our very own PFP class leaders and Course chair, Mr. Phang, and Mr. Melvin.

 
All of the teams were pumped up for the games and they gave their best in all the different sports. It was a great challenge for everyone.

Through sports day, the students had fun together, making new friends and enjoying themselves.

PFP Science Talk by Prof Sow  

A PFP Science Talk was conducted by Professor Sow from NUS on 30th Oct 2019 for the PFP students.

 

The students attended the talk at LT1A and had a wonderful time learning science with demonstrations.

Red Dot Museum Visit

On 15-16 Jan 2020, the science and technology track students had the opportunity to visit the Red Dot Design Museum to explore creative ideas and to get inspirations for creating prototypes, as part of the assessment for Fundamentals of Innovation and Design. The tour is about 2-hours long and the group representatives from each classes had a fulfilling trip.

2018 Events

PFP Instagram Competition 2018 (22 Jan 2018)

The PFP Student Chapter organized an Instagram Competition for all PFP students to participate. The photo required at least 75% of the class to be present in the photo to be eligible for the competition. The theme of the photo is Chinese New Year. This competition was created as an opportunity for PFP classes to bond and create memories.

PFP ECG talk  

The PFP ECG talk was conducted by the SP ECG Counsellor, Ms Loke on the 9th of May 2018. The talk focused on on two components of career self-identity: values and interests. The talk aims to raise the students’ self-awareness and help them gain greater clarity regarding their values and interests in relation to their future career aspirations, and start to make plans to develop their personal, learning and career goals.

PFP (MAE) Industry Visit 

On 18 July 2018, 36 PFP students had the opportunity to visit Mazak Singapore.  The visit included an overview of the company as well as a tour of the production line, R&D facilities and Technology and Solution Centre.  Exhibits on the latest machines and its applications were showcased.  With the shift into IoT globally, the staff and students were also shown how the internet of things would gradually be integrated into the manufacturing plant seamlessly to enhance productivity.

Leap Foundation Camp 2018

A total of 228 students participated in the LEAP Foundation Camp at Kota Tinggi on 24-27th Sep 2018 and 1st-4th Oct 2018.

This is a 4D3N experiential camp where participants will be given situational leadership and scenarios where they will have the opportunity to practice on Sean Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens”.

2017 Events

PFP Bonding Day 2017 - Halloween Escape Room (1 Nov 2017)

This year, PFP Student Chapter organized the first ever Escape Room for PFP Bonding Session. The theme of the Escape Room is Halloween. 

There were 3 rooms with 3 different themes: Doll House, Egyptian and Ghost. The students had a great time solving puzzles in the Escape Room with their friends, and worked together as a team to escape.

Laser Cutter Workshop

Laser Cutter Workshop conducted on the 25 Oct 2017 is organized for the PFP students, by the Makerspace at SP Library. The participants created artistic designs using a software, which were then used to make keychains.

Army Open House (AOH) 2017

All PFP students attended the Army Open House at F1 pit on 24 May 2017. The event not only highlighted the Army's 3rd Gen equipment and capabilities, AOH2017 also featured a suite of engaging and interactive activities.

Some of the highlights of the event includes NS50 Showcase and the Dynamic Defence Display (D3) show. The students had the opportunities to learn interesting facts about the national service, the evolution and achievements of the national servicemen through the showcase.

PFP Talk by Prof Sow

A PFP talk on “Science in Action” was conducted by Professor Sow from NUS on 19th July 2017 for the PFP students.

The students attended the talk at LT1A and had a wonderful time learning science with demonstration.

PFP Talk by Dr Looi

A talk on "The Science of Happiness or Laughter" by Dr Yvonne Looi was conducted on 3 May 2017 for the PFP students.

Dr Yvonne Looi is a Joyologist. She has a PhD in biology and has a certification in the science of happiness, who specialize in Laughter Yoga and Happiness Workshops for companies and enterprises.

The students attended the talk at LT4 and had a wonderful time laughing it loud!

"Happiness is indeed a choice, so laugh all you want, it is free!"

A warm welcome to our 251 freshmen to Singapore Polytechnic!

Through the activities held from 10-13 April 2017, freshmen got to know new friends, SP campus and also the Polytechnic Foundation Program (PFP), thus preparing them to blend into the new academic environment.

During the Meet The Directors lunch session on 11 April, the freshmen also had the opportunity to meet the various school directors who answered their queries pertaining to their diplomas.

The School of Mathematics & Science organised the 4th PFP Completion Ceremony at the Auditorium on 30 Mar 2017.

Once again, our PFP cohort achieved 100% passing rate with 221 students all completed PFP successfully!

PFP Homecoming 2017

Congratulations to our 1st PFP alumni for making it into the final semester of their diploma study. The tutors and the first PFP alumni had a warm and heartfelt gathering at FoodHaven on 25 January 2017.

This get-together event marked a milestone for our first PFP alumni, to reunite with their tutors after embarking into their 3-year diploma program, following the completion of their PFP program in 2014. The students had a wonderful time keeping in touch with their ex-PFP friends and tutors, reminiscing the fruitful year in their PFP program. Tutors of the PFP alumni were also happy for their students' achievements, and some of the accomplishments by the PFP alumni includes:

2016 Events

PFP Go Green Day 2016

PFP Go Green Day was held on 26 October 2016 with the aim of inculcating in students a sense of responsibility and good life habits.

The students were tasked to clean up the classrooms and corridors of T7, the teaching block for PFP students. With teamwork and co-operation, the students worked together as a class and transformed T7 into a cleaner and tidier environment for learning. In process, they learnt personal responsibility, social responsibility, and became more environmentally conscious of their learning spaces and surroundings.

LEAP Foundation Camp 2016

A total of 221 students participated in the 4 Days 3 Nights LEAP Foundation Camp at Kota Tinggi on 6-8 Oct 2016 and 12-15 Oct 2016.

It has been a new and enriching experience for all participants, as they went through the entire process of growing and bonding as a class. Through this process, they have also grown to become better leaders by practising the "7 Habits of Effective Teens".

Dialogue with Dr Maliki Osman, Senior Minister of State, MinDef, MFA

430 students (including SPOT, GenEd and PFP students) were invited for a dialogue session with Dr Maliki Osman, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Defence & Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Mayor, South East District held on 20 Jul 2016 at SP Auditorium.

The students had an engaging session with Dr Maliki Osman, who shared with the audience on "How do global problems affect us locally".

Science Talk & Demo by Prof Sow from NUS

NUS Head of Physics, Prof Sow Chorng-Haur shared with the PFP students on some of the latest scientific developments and trends on 13 Jul 2016.

He spoke on nanotechnology, "the big science of the small world." Participants were also treated to captivating lab demonstrations by the Head of Physics Prof Sow. Prof Sow's unparalleled flair for science enthralled and reminded the PFP students of their love for Physics.

RSAF Open House @ Paya Lebar Airport

As part of the learning journey for AEC module, SP managed to secure a visit for PFP Students to RSAF Open House at Paya Lebar Airport on 19 May 2016.

One class even had a rare opportunity to fly on board CH-47SD Chinook helicopter around Singapore!

The trip also included a tour of the RSAF Pavilion, an exhibition gallery that features the RSAF's history and transformation, its full spectrum operations, as well as stories of its airmen and women in action. They could also try their hand at the various aircraft and weapon system simulators, as well as other aviation-related games.

It was a fruitful trip as the students gained a better understanding of the RSAF, as well as the crucial role that RSAF played in defending Singapore’s skies.
