To equip participants with essential histological techniques to perform tissue processing, microtomy and cryomicrotomy. 

Course Objective

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Explain the principle of tissue processing
2. Outline the protocol of tissue processing
3. Operate and maintain the automated tissue processor in the correct and safe manner
4. Identify the component parts of the microtome and cryomicrotome
5. Prepare paraffin and frozen tissue block for sectioning
6. Cut good tissue sections from paraffin and frozen tissue block
7. Operate and maintain the microtome and cryomicrotome in the correct and safe manner

Course Outline

This is a one and a half day workshop, consisting of one day of teaching and half a day of assessment. The training workshop will cover both the theory and practical aspects of essential histological techniques relevant to biomedical research including tissue processing, microtomy and cryomicrotomy, with a focus on hands-on practice. Participants will be assessed on the technical skills in microtomy and cryomicrotomy, as well as on the proper and safe use of the equipment.

Minimum Requirements

Basic knowledge in biomedical science and related fields

Certification / Accreditation

Joint-Certificate of Performance by SP & ABMLPS (electronic Certificate) will be awarded to participants who pass the assessment and whose attendance is not less than 75%

1. Excellence in Teaching Award 2014

Dr Lai Kin Wai has been teaching in Singapore Polytechnic (SP) for almost 10 years and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Diploma of Biomedical Science. He started his career as a medical technologist and has more than 12 years of experiences working in the histopathology lab of major hospitals. Dr Lai obtained his PhD in the National University of Singapore (NUS), studying on animal model of minimal change nephrotic syndrome. He worked as a research fellow in the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore prior to joining SP and his research interests is in biomarker discovery of stomach cancer.
