Course Objective

First of a three-part course, this beginner course serves as an introduction to lighting design fundamentals to new architectural/interior or landscape design graduates to appreciate and understand the importance of lighting and the role lighting plays in their design.

Participants are able to:
• appreciate and understand light as a medium;
• explore the behavior and quality of light against different materials and surfaces;
• experiment with light to create different experiences in 3 dimensional space; and
• understand the different sources of artificial lighting and how they are applied in different functional spaces

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to apply the knowledge in their workplace, to enhance the design and quality of spaces

Through this 2-day short course, participants will:
• understand the terminology of lighting;
• apply different lighting effects;
• make basic lighting specifications;
• produce a basic lighting layout; and
• produce a lighting design scheme

Course Outline

The 2-day workshop includes lectures, site visit/s and a design studio with hands on exercises.

Minimum Requirements

No academic paper qualification pre-requisite is required.
Participants with design background, understand architectural drawings, make simple sketches / draw will be a bonus.

Certification / Accreditation

• Certificate of Attendance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate

Course Trainer(s)

Toh Yah Li

Toh Yah Li is a Certified Lighting Designer (CLD), a professional member of International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), and part of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES).  As Principal of Light Collab, she led the team on various notable award-winning international projects such as monuments, commercial buildings, hotels and residence in Japan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia and other parts of Asia.

Graduated from the architectural school of National University of Singapore, she also obtained a Masters in Architectural Lighting design in Hochschule Wismar, Germany.  Yah Li was one of the top 5 to be recognised with the Certified Lighting Designer (CLD) Certification globally and the first in Asia and Singapore.

She was also shortlisted for the Designer of the Year for President's Design Award of 2018 and was the only one to receive commendation from the Jury for the outstanding “body of work that is conceptually clever, boldly experimental and narratively powerful” and “skilful use of light as a medium to tell stories”. 

Her other involvements include serving in the working committee of the Singapore Lighting Technology and Design Centre (set up by the Building Construction Authority and Singapore Green Building Council); being the regional coordinator of IALD Southeast Asia and an educator in facilitating workshops for design and lighting at tertiary institutions; taking part in the IALD Enlighten Conference in Denver 2017 (as the content steering committee) and Professional Lighting Design Convention (PLDC) Singapore 2018.
