Introduction
In the past decades, many industrial sectors were drastically transformed by technology, globalisation and digitalisation. In response to these global shifts, Singapore has embraced Industry 4.0, and is moving its industrial base up the value chain to strengthen its position as the leading manufacturing hub for companies worldwide.
For this transformation journey, Singapore Economic Development Board (“EDB”) launched the Smart Industry Readiness Index2 (“SIRI”) to help companies to start, scale and sustain their Industry 4.0 initiatives. Under this framework where technology is part of the key building blocks of industry 4.0, automation was identified as a critical pillar and in fact, automation has been and will continue to be a key enabler for advanced manufacturing. The role of automation is evolving and to cope with rising demand for smaller batches and on-demand production, it is no longer sufficient to simply maximize efficiency. To adapt quickly to changing market requirements, automation needs to be flexible, robots become smarter (with AI, ML and sensor technologies) to cope with a far greater degree of task-to-task variability.
Major forecasting companies reported rapid growth and adoption of collaborative robots as well as Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in production lines. Adoption of AMRs allow plants to reconfigure the flow of parts and components between stations thereby enabling manufacturing processes to be completed in a fully automated sequence.
Through national initiatives such as the SkillsFuture Series in Advanced Manufacturing, the Singapore Government continues to work alongside industry players and institutes of higher learning to equip our people with the necessary skills for advanced manufacturing. During the 20th June 2020 nation address, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced the formation of industry-led coalitions in seven key growth areas. This course is timely and in alignment with government’s vision to support the upskilling of existing engineers in the area of robotics application and automation by deepening their skills and staying relevant, enhancing one’s employability.
In view of the foreseeable need and demand for people with the skillsets to operate and maintain robotic automation systems and to use ML and AI in such systems, the course aim to build up manpower capability and capacity in this field to assist and equip Singapore-based firms in their Industry 4.0 transformation journey.
