There are infinite technical solutions available based on a catalogue/ technical/ practical approach to materials/ detailing but there will only be one material/ detail valid for the design concept.
This workshop is designed to provide participants with a conceptual grounding in material and detailing in addition to the practical / functional considerations of material properties, typical detailing and design detailing.
Through a series of lectures, site visits and hands-on design studio, participants will be introduced to the characteristics and qualities of concrete, as well as the principles and nature of typical detailing. Participants will also be able to apply this knowledge to conceptualise, design and detail an architectural element using concrete.
Participants will be able to apply these principles in their workplace, be it spatial design or detailing of their spatial projects.
To develop the conceptual thinking to approach materials and detailing through awareness and understanding on the notion of craft, detailing in relation to design.
Through this 3-day short course, participants will:
• Develop an awareness to the notion of craft and detailing in relation to design;
• Understand the characteristics and qualities of concrete;
• Understand principles and nature of typical detailing
• Apply the notion of craft, detailing to conceptualise and design an architectural element using concrete

Minimum Entry Requirements / Assumed Skills and Knowledge
No academic paper qualification pre-requisite required. Participants with design background will be a bonus.

Profile of Trainer
Ms Yong Sy Lyng
Award winner Yong Sy Lyng from OWMF Architecture, will be conducting this series of workshops to approach concepts through materials and detailing. Since 2003, Sy Lyng has worked on institutional, commercial, and residential projects of various scales with multiple award winning offices in New York, China and Singapore including Shigeru Ban Architects, SOM New York and Arc Studio. She graduated from the Cooper Union in New York. She believes in striking a balance between practice and research/ teaching. OWMF is currently conceptualising and building a few architectural and interior design projects in the Asia region.
