This course will provide the knowledge and skills for creating and shaping a meaningful soundtrack to tell an engaging story, starting with recorded location sound. You will practice sound-editing techniques and explore how sound can shape the scenes
and the characters, with considerations to meaning, rhythm, spatiality, mood and emotion. There will also be listening exercises to illustrate these facets of sound, and more importantly, to experience the effect of such choices
This course focuses on the knowledge and skills for creating and shaping meaningful sound design for a video/film in order to establish depth for the story and the characters.
Participants will practise sound-editing techniques and explore
the way sound design imbues the video/film with meaning, rhythm, spatiality, mood and emotion – all are key factors for good storytelling.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1 Apply techniques in recording and editing sound to achieve:
• Clarity and depth in the storytelling
• Appropriate pace and energy
• Appropriate mood and atmosphere
2 Apply key practices of location sound
3 Analyse visual content for appropriate sonic treatment

Participants who are interested in sound design.
Minimum Entry Requirements / Assumed Skills and Knowledge
Participants who have done simple editing of video or sound is advantageous.
Award / Certification / Accreditation
• Certificate of Attendance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate
• Certificate of Performance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Performance will be awarded to participants who pass the examination and meet at least 75% attendance rate
Steve Ho is an award-winning Sound Designer with more than 20 years of experience. He has worked at Sony Pictures Television Networks Asia and Song Zu, before setting up his very own suite, 40HZ. His extensive professional
experience cuts across broadcast television, radio, and web-based content, and he has been teaching for more than 15 years.
