Course Objective

This Class 1 & 2 (Deck Officer) Certificate of Competency preparatory programme is offered by the Singapore Maritime Academy of the Singapore Polytechnic. This course is designed for junior officers with experience as nautical officers in the maritime industry who wish to have the opportunity to enhance and deepen their skills and stay relevant in the maritime industry.

This course aims to provide participants with knowledge of intermediate to advanced operational skills in ship navigation and ship operation as well as maritime management knowledge to equip participants with holistic skillsets necessary to apply across the maritime industry

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to :

To meet the mandatory requirements, under Chapter II and Section A-II/2 of STCW Regulation as amended (including 2010 Manila Amendments), for knowledge, understanding and proficiency in the function ‘Navigation at Management Level’, as applicable to ships of 500GT or more, necessary to support the execution of tasks, duties and responsibilities as Captains or Chief Officers. The learning outcomes to accomplish this is in relation to:- planning a voyage and conducting navigation- use of publications- ships routeing- ship reporting systems- tidal predictions at standard and secondary ports- determining position and the accuracy of resultant position fix by any means- establishing watch-keeping arrangements and effective bridge teamwork procedures- operational features and limitations of modern systems of navigation, including Radar, ARPA AIS and ECDIS.- co-ordinate SAR procedures- maintain safe navigation through the use of information from navigation equipment and systems to assist command decision making- maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making 

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:

- Manoeuvre and Handle a Ship in all Conditions
- Respond to Navigational Emergencies

Minimum Requirements

The entry requirement for the Certificate of Competency Class 1 & 2 (Deck Officer) requires a minimum of having a Certificate of Competency in Class 3 (Deck Officer)

Certification / Accreditation

  • Certificate of Attendance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate

  • Certificate of Completion (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to participants who pass the examination and meet at least 75% attendance rate
