Course Objective

The Class 1 & 2 (Marine Engineer Officer) Certificate of Competency Preparatory programme is offered by the Singapore Maritime Academy of the Singapore Polytechnic. This course is designed for junior officers with experience as marine engineers in the maritime industry who wish to have the opportunity to enhance and deepen their skills and stay relevant in the maritime industry.

This course aims to provide participants with knowledge of intermediate to advanced operational skills in ship operation. Participants will also be equipped with maritime management knowledge that is a holistic skillsets required across the maritime industry.

Course Outline

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 
• Maintain a safe engine watch   
• Respond to emergencies 
• Control the operation of the ship and care for persons onboard at the management level
• Monitor compliance with legislative requirements

Minimum Requirements

Participants must have a Certificate of Competency in Class 5 (Marine Engineer Officer). Letter of eligibility is required from MPA prior to attending the course.

Certification / Accreditation

• Certificate of Attendance (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded to participants who meet at least 75% attendance rate


• Certificate of Completion (electronic Certificate will be issued)
A Certificate of Completion will be awarded to participants who pass the examination and meet at least 75% attendance rate
