Course Introduction

This workshop teaches and shares different methods of fabrication / prototyping for Interior Designers, Architects and Product Designers using
Rhinoceros as a software platform.

It is intended for designers who has CAD experience and who are comfortable to use 3D software to design and build.


Course Objective

The objectives of this workshop is: 

This 3 day workshop will provide students and professionals with a functional understanding of Rhino3D 5.0 as a design platform, from design to build. For this particular workshop, the participants will be using Architectural and Product Designer models as their main 3D geometry. The Participants will not only learn the Rhino software, but also have hands on experience of digital prototyping.

Course summary:

 • Review the interface of Rhino and its toolbars
 • Introduction to how to draw in 2D 
 • Introduction to Curve Editing 
 • Basic Transform commands 
 • Surfaces, UV and Topologies 
 • Edit Surfaces 
 • History with some commands 
 • Curves from Objects 
 • Analysis   
 • Solids and How to edit Solids 
 • Edit control points 
 • Printing   
 • Preparing files for Laser machine 
 • Building physical to-scale models

Total number of hours, 24hrs, 8 hours each day.


Course Outline

DAY 1

Morning (4 hours) | Introduction:
• Get acquainted with the Rhino interface and menus
• Navigate around the Rhino model
• Create 2-D lines, polylines, and NURBS curves
• Modeling setup and mode functions:
• ortho, grip, snap, and planar
• Fast 3-D solids and surfaces
• The Rhino layering system
• Delete objects
• Discover display commands used to view different parts of the model.
• Pan, zoom and reset model views

Afternoon (4 Hours) | Prototyping:
• Prototyping safety briefing
• 2D pattern based laser cutting
• Q&A

DAY 2:

Morning (4 hours) | Precision Modelling:
• Use coordinates and constraints to model easily and accurately. Move off the x-y plane and use viewports to establish the current construction plane. Draw polygons and ellipses. Draw freeform curves and compare interpolated and control points
• Draw with absolute, relative rectangular, and polar coordinates
• Distance and angle constraints
• Using object snaps
• Analysis commands: length, distance, angle, radius
• Smart tracking and constraints
• Viewports, construction planes, and modeling in 3-D space
• Drawing circles, arcs, rectangles, ellipses and polygons
• Model free-form curves
• Create helix and spiral curves
• Loft and extrude curves

Afternoon (4 Hours) | Prototyping:
• Surface based design
• 3D surface based laser cutting
• Q&A

DAY 3:

Morning (4 hours) | Geometry Manipulation:
• Edit curves with fillet and chamfer
• Use the Gumball to move, copy, rotate, scale
• Array polar and rectangular
• Boolean union, difference, and intersection
• Offset curves and surfaces
• Trim and split for curves and surfaces
• Extend and extend to surface
• Practice modeling and editing

Afternoon (4 Hours) | Prototyping:
• 3D structural based design
• 3D structural model making through laser cutting
• Wrap up
• Q&A

This workshop is designed specifically to engage students and professionals from the creative industries who have an interest in using Rhino3D as a design tool to enhance their skillset at an accelerated pace. Minimum Entry Requirements / Assumed Skills and Knowledge
Student or Professional who has CAD experience and comfortable to learn and use 3D software to design and build. Previous drafting
and modeling experience is essential. Participants need to bring their own laptops with Rhino installed for hand-on training. You can request a trial version of Rhino from https://www.rhino3d.com/download

Trainers

Tao Lingyun is an Authorized Rhino Trainer graduated from Architectural Association School of Architecture and specialises in advanced geometry manipulation. He has worked for various award-winning firms and projects in different continents with over 12 years' experience in digital prototyping. Lingyun will share his expertise in form generation and fabrication through this workshop.
