The Singapore Polytechnic (SP) Media, Arts & Design School (MAD) is pleased to introduce the SGUS Specialist Diploma in Applied Drama & Psychology in Youth Work. This is a programme offered to trainees who are considering a career in the Social
Service sector and are interested in working with youth. In this programme, trainees will learn about the social service sector in Singapore, gain an understanding of the psychological development of people across the life spectrum (with an focus
on the youth community), pick up some research skills and be equipped with knowledge of applied drama to be able to engage the youth community. At the 2019 Social Service Summit, Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee identified a
manpower crunch in the social service sector (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/social-service-sector-ncss-technology-funding-manpower-crunch-11724984).
In addition, the recent Covid crisis has highlighted the crucial role that the social services plays in supporting different types of communities in Singapore. In April 2020, Mr Lee shared in parliament how social service organisations have stepped up
to support "low-income Singaporean and transnational families, low-income seniors, the differently-abled, and persons with mental health conditions". He also said that the ministry will continue to "make social services and help more comprehensive,
convenient, and coordinated". (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/covid-19-coronavirus-vulnerable-groups-msf-12613724)
In May 2020, the government announced that the Covid-19 support package "will include ways to help the social service sector".
The government will also "work with the sector to embrace digitalisation, accelerate transformation and scale up new capabilities." (https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/social-service-sector-to-get-more-help-in-new-support-package)
Trainees are required to equip with a computer Notebook (installed with minimally windows10 OS) when attending lessons.
In this programme, trainees will learn about the social service sector in Singapore, who the key providers are and how different community groups are supported by the various organisations. This will help them to understand the scope and reach of different
organisations and how they all function in the social service ecosystem. Trainees will also benefit from studying basic psychology as this will help them to recognise trends and patterns of behaviours across the lifespan. This is helpful especially
since the trainees are expecting to engage with different communities after completing this course. Research is a key component in this course and a good understanding of research skills will help trainees to design simple research projects and evaluate
programmes for their effectiveness. The last pillar in this programme equips trainees to be able to engage communities effectively. They will learn basic counselling skills that will help them to more effective conversations with others and applied
drama skills which will help them to design interesting activities for communities.
This programme is trainees who are interested in working in the Social Service Sector in entry level positions. This is also suitable for individuals who want to rejoin the social service sector after a hiatus as this will serve as a comprehensive refresher
course for them.
