Sustainable Transformation of an Abandoned Tin Mine for a Better World

Synopsis
When Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah purchased an abandoned tin mine 40 years ago, he had the vision to leverage engineering and transform this wasteland into a sustainable, green and smart city. A big part of that vision was to provide education as a way out of poverty. Today, Sunway University offers its 10,000 students a holistic education that combines knowledge, skills, values, mindset and career preparation. Glean insights into how Sunway University achieves this by having its students learn about sustainable development, planetary health and entrepreneurship and most recently, participate in engineering programmes in collaboration with Sunway construction company.

RINC 2023

RINC 2023 is anchored on the theme of Engineering the Future – Sustainable Transformation via Innovation. Key industries in Singapore need to transform in response to global developments. Technological advancements have accelerated the impetus for Singapore to advance towards Industry 4.0 and becoming a Smart Nation by harnessing technology to effect transformation in healthcare, transport, aviation, energy, urban living, government services, and businesses. The growing importance of globalisation also warrants a need for local enterprises to sharpen their digital competencies and tap on international markets as informed by Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 Plan. Engineering is crucial for driving sustainable transformation through innovation in these areas. SP’s School of EEE partners with leading industry players, Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) and government agencies to stay ahead of key engineering domains as Singapore is positioned for a digital-first sustainable future.

HIGHLIGHTS OF RINC 2023

The conference would officially announce a strategic collaboration formed between Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and ShenHao (Singapore) Pte Ltd. This collaboration aligns with Singapore’s plan of advancing towards Industry 4.0 and helps to achieve the desired SP outcomes for PET training to equip current students with latest industry insights and knowledge, and for CET training to upskill and reskill workforce for the industry, in particular the robotics and automation sector.

In addition, the conference would announce partnerships between SP and its new overseas partners. These partnerships seek to expose SP students to overseas learning programmes that could take the form of industry visits, internships or competitions among others. This is aligned with the broader MOE internationalisation drive for local IHL students to participate in overseas programmes and gain a global perspective.

There would also be a panel discussion session fielded by key practitioners. The theme is “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Transformation” and explores how companies, academic institutions, and government agencies could engage one another to help companies leverage technologies and embark on their transformation journey.
