SP Won Big in PolyFinTech100 API Hackathon 2020
28 Aug 2020
In the PolyFinTech Hackathon held on Saturday, 18 July 2020, having contested against more than 60 teams from all the polytechnics, four teams from SP School of Business emerged as winners!
The competition is an annual event initiated by Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), organized by the five polytechnics in Singapore and sponsored by financial industry partners. The aim is to nurture young people to meet the rapidly changing needs
of the financial services sector. They will get to address real-world problems and develop Fintech prototypes using Application Programming Interface (API).
This year, School of Business won big with two champions and two runners-up in the seven categories. Our winning teams are a combination of talents from Diploma in Banking and Finance (DBKF) and Diploma in Financial Informatics (DFI). Since the competition
started in March this year, our students committed themselves for the presentation in July. The preparation was demanding as they had to brainstorm ideas, propose business strategies, develop prototypes, and pitch the solutions to a large audience.
In addition, they had to face the challenge of meeting remotely due to Covid-19 situation. Nevertheless, our students were quick to adapt, and their hard work paid off.
Among the four winning teams, two did well in De-centralized Finance category. Our champion team initiated the idea of encouraging young people to pool their savings together to meet common goals through smart contracts, whereas the runner-up proposed
a game to encourage youths to start their saving early.
Our champion team in Financial Inclusion and AI category wanted to encourage people to experience online trading through their mobile game. The runner-up in Sustainable Finance category proposed an online portal that connects consumers to remittance agents
that offer the best rate.
For the two champion teams, their journey is not over yet. They will meet the other five champions again in the Fintech Festival 2020 in December this year, to fight for Grand Final Champion. Let us hope they will do SP proud again!
