MARITIME EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING (MEL) CAMP

Direct experience of being on board a cruise ship is a regular feature of SMA activities.  The Maritime Experiential Learning (MEL) Camps, a collaborative effort with Star Cruises since 2004, provides a floating campus for her students. Each year at least 200 students from SMA as well as selected few from its local and foreign partners participate in these MEL Camps conducted 2-3 times a year.  During the four-day return cruise to Penang and Phuket, in addition to the experience of living aboard and seeing the operation of a large well-run cruise ship, the students learn about the global shipping industry and Singapore’s role as well as they listen to highly motivational talks by speakers with experience in dealing with many challenges, including climbing Mt Everest, going on foot to both poles and swimming Malacca Strait.
