DBIT Student shares her unique experience blogging for WorldSkills Singapore Competition
I have always had a passion for blogging, so I felt awfully blessed when my lecturer Ms Dora Chua sounded me out if I would like to be part of the New Media Team for the WorldSkills Singapore 2014 Competition from 10 to 12 July 2014. My job was to blog about the event.
For those who have no clue what the WorldSkills competition is about, it is akin to the Olympics. The only difference is that for WorldSkills, instead of competing to be the best athlete, the competitors here compete to be the best at the skill they are doing, be it engineering, cooking, web designing or even restaurant servicing!
WorldSkills Singapore 2014 Competition
Students from different Polytechnics, ITEs and other schools compete for the chance to represent Singapore at the International WorldSkills competition to be held in Sao Paulo, Brazil next year. I could really see that this competition means a great deal to the competitors because of the recognition and future job opportunities it would offer.

On Wednesday, 9th of July, I checked into the hotel at ITE College West a day before the competition started. I had dinner with the rest of the New Media Team and we talked about our previous blogging experiences. I was really glad to finally meet people with the same interest in blogging as I! Throughout the 3-day event, I learned a lot from everyone on the team, especially from a student named Theophilus from Nanyang Polytechnic Mass Media Management and from same church as I!

At the opening ceremony at ITE College Central, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said the efforts of the technical education institutes have contributed to Singapore's low youth unemployment rate of 6.7 per cent.
I managed to get interviews with a few competitors and judges during my time at ITE Central, where the main bulk of the competition was held. These interviews, gave me a glimpse of what it was like to be a competitor and the tremendous work that needs to be done. There were so many aspects to be judged and competitors did not rest even during break time!
Summing Up
Those 3 days were, in a nutshell, days I would not give up for anything. The things that I had learnt and the opportunities I received were countless! It allowed me to see things from a totally different perspective and understand how it felt like to be a competitor at the WorldSkills competition. It also gave me exposure to how it is like being part of a New Media Team, to have to constantly be conscious of whatever is happening around me, so I can take it down and use it as a means to engage audiences via the social media.
