On the 15th of July 2015, about 30 students from the Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT) course went to visit the Carousell Office located at 71 Ayer Rajah Crescent. Carousell is a mobile e-commerce application that was founded on May 1, 2012. It is an app for users to buy or sell items. It has then grown to a really popular app, and has expanded to other countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and USA.
When we arrived at the doorstep of the office, we were greeted by Marcus Tan, one of the co-founders of Carousell. He gave a presentation about Carousell's beginnings, and how it grew to become such a renowned app. He also mentioned about the hardships the company faced, and gave valuable advice on being a technopreneur. It seems that the road to creating your own business is tougher than I thought!
Marcus also showed us about the various social media platforms that Carousell uses to promote its app. By fully utilising the power of social media, he managed to spread the news about Carousell all over the world. He also showed us a video where Carousell participated in a flea market event held in Taiwan. It was really intriguing as I have never seen businesses such as Carousell doing such things. I hope that by using some of Carousell's marketing strategies, I can also help to market my Social Media Marketing client!
Overall, the trip was really knowledgeable, and I finally got to know more about the e-commerce in Singapore. I was lucky to get to see Carousell's office, and I hope other DBIT students in the future can get the chance to go there!
