Current students and recent graduates from the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) can now be better prepared for professional work or studies requiring software development. They will also be able to distinguish themselves for greater opportunities.

The school recently inked a two-year collaboration agreement with Proxor Limited, allowing full-time students, part-time students taking refresher courses and graduates1 to take the Software Developer Examination (SDE), leading to a Proxor certification.

Proxor Limited, a Carnegie Mellon University spinoff, is a provider for Authentic ExaminationTM that accurately measures the test-taker’s ability to program realistic problems in a professional programming environment. This enables software development companies to confidently hire and retain software development talent.

Industry players in Singapore, such as CrimsonLogic and the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF), have already started to adopt the SDE to identify programming competency.

Dr Faris Akbar Hajamaideen, Director of DMIT, said, “We are honoured to be the first polytechnic in Singapore to collaborate with Proxor to offer the sponsored Java Software Developer Exam to our students and alumni. The certification will no doubt add value and enhance the portfolio of our students and alumni and provide them a head start in the IT industry."

1 Only alumni who are studying or serving National Service are permitted to take the SDE.
"I am very proud to be given this opportunity by SP DMIT to be part of the Proxor certification program. Taking the test has allowed me to better gauge my software development ability and I am happy to have achieved a good Proxor rating which I am confident will enhance my programming credibility to my future employers."

"I feel that the Proxor exam is one of the most realistic exam which I have taken thus far as it simulates real life working conditions (an incomplete app which we need to enhance). Going though Proxor has also given me more confidence in the practical aspect of software development instead of just the usual theory based exams."
