Beyond just an act of social service

23 Feb 2017

The Straits Times, 23 Feb 2017 - Article featured “Sayang”, a forum theatre piece staged for residents from rental flat communities as part of The Community Theatre programme. This programme by Beyond Social Services was set up in 2014 by Noor Izzaty Ishak, who is an alumna from SP’s Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology course. Her plays delve into common issues faced by the rental flat community, such as schoolgoing issues and broken families. Noor Izzaty decided to bring theatre into marginalised communities as the depiction of social issues resonated deeply with them. SP’s Diploma in Applied Drama and Psychology student Ong Si Ying, who volunteered as a stage manager for Sayang, said that being involved in this production has made her more sensitive to warning signs among at-risk youth.
