Female seafarer works non-stop for six months

27 Jun 2017

The New Paper, 27 Jun 2017 - Article featured SP’s Diploma in Marine Engineering alumna Tan Hui Xian who works as the 4th engineer at home-grown shipping line Pacific International Lines. Her job not only requires her to work 10 hours daily in a 40 deg C room, but also to live away from home for six consecutive months. She finds herself the only female seafarer on most ships and she had met male colleagues who launched personal attacks or tended to be more judgmental. Hui Xian shared that despite the setbacks, her job is a ‘childhood dream come true’ as she has always loved hands-on work and excelled in physics and maths.
