Making Engineering attractive to teens

The Straits Times, 24 Oct 2016 - Article featured the joint-poly Engineering Discovery event as one of the initiatives that makes Engineering attractive to teens. The event which was attended by more than 800 students from 11 secondary schools, saw students attending workshops and participating in hands-on activities. The workshops which were held for the first time in the event’s 13-year history, allowed participants a glimpse at the practical side of Engineering as they created model gliders and miniature solar-powered cars. At the event, each polytechnic also featured two interactive projects done by their engineering students, from robots to help the elderly in tasks such as physical exercise, to an app that detects hearing loss. Students also attended a talk on the educational and career options for engineers. SP’s senior lecturer and chairman of the Engineering Discovery organising committee, Wendy Leck, opined on the relevance of conducting the workshops for the first time. In the article, the Ministry of Education mentioned that the polys had a combined intake of 7,300 engineering students last year and this figure has remained stable over the years.
