Marine service provider chairman Farid Khan announces presidency bid

Today, 12 July 2017 - Article featured SP’s Diploma in Marine Engineering alumnus Farid Khan Kaim Khan who announced his intention to run in the upcoming presidential election. Both his Pakistani father and brother died when he was young and Farid dropped out of school at the age of 14 to support his mother and eight other siblings. He worked at a timber processing factory during the day, and as a car washer at night. He later enrolled into SP and after graduating, he became an engineer and rose up the ranks while working in various companies. He helped to start the Asia Pacific branch of the French firm Bourbon Offshore after becoming a partner of the firm in 2005. He is currently the chairman of Singapore-based marine service provider Bourbon Offshore Asia Pacific. Apart from Mr Farid, Second Chance Properties CEO Salleh Marican has also declared his intention to contest. Another name that has been bandied about is Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob, whose father is Indian-Muslim. Similar story was reported in Lianhe Zaobao, Berita Harian and Mothership.
