Poly students innovated smart socket to make homes more environmentally friendly

Lianhe Zaobao – zbNow, 31 Dec 2014 - Three SP students clinched the top prize at the Regional Red Hat Challenge@Labs Competition held on 17 December. This knowledge-based technology competition for tertiary students across Asia Pacific is jointly organized by Red Hat, Inc and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). With the theme 'Smart Living, Smart Homes', the competition aimed to challenge students to develop smart home solutions using open source technology and address the challenges faced by individuals and enterprises today as they build these solutions. Lindon Ng and Preshant Dayan Achuthan from Diploma in Infocomm Security Management, as well as Tan Zai Wei from Diploma Information Technology, beat the other 108 groups in this competition with their innovation – SmartHomie. SmartHomie aims to battle climate change through an effortless Smart Home that will help homes save electricity with ease. Individuals can control their home appliances at anywhere remotely, monitor the amount of consumption they have spent on each appliance and turn them on and off at a specific time. The trio won a grand cash prize of US$10,000 (approximately S$13,000) as well as an internship opportunity of up to six months at Red Hat in Beijing.
