Visitors can also find out more about the new exemption opportunity for first year School of Computing (SoC) students in 2025.

Exemption Opportunity for School of Computing Students

In SP’s School of Computing (SoC) Academic Year 2025/2026 intake, all students who have taken O-Level Computing can apply for exemptions for up to two fundamental modules in their first year of studies. This is equivalent to 135 curriculum hours.

The credit exemptions will open learning spaces for SoC students to leverage on industry and professional learning packages and systems, including the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Training, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) SkillsBuild programme, LinkedIn Learning, and the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics & Governance Body of Knowledge.

The exemption opportunity is applicable to students enrolling in the Common ICT Programme (CITP) and all three diplomas under SoC, namely the Diplomas in Applied AI & Analytics (DAAA), Cybersecurity & Digital Forensics (DCDF), and Information Technology (DIT).

Spotlight on Notable Industry Projects

  • VR-powered Elderly Rehabilitation: Gamified Solutions for Enhanced Recovery

Students from the Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and the Diploma in Computer Engineering have poured their hearts and minds into a gamified VR rehabilitation system to enhance the recovery of elderly individuals. This innovative solution, a testament to their dedication, combines an assistive knee brace that supports standing and sitting with engaging VR games, improving physical and cognitive abilities while reducing the burden on healthcare providers.

    • Crispy-like Snack Product from Upcycled Soy Pulp

Students from the Diploma in Food Science & Technology are developing a healthier, crispy snack with increased fibre, whole grain content, and reduced fats using okara, a by-product of soybean processing. The project aims to valorise okara while creating a nutritious and sustainable snack option.

    • Unlocking the Skincare Potential of Soursop Seed Oil

Recognising the potential of soursop seed oil in skincare, students from the Diploma in Chemical Engineering are exploring sustainable and cost-effective methods of extracting and utilising this natural resource for skincare applications.

    • Plastic Biochar as Cement Substitution in Mortar

Cement is known for its high carbon emissions. Students from the Diploma in Civil Engineering investigated using biochar derived from food and plastic waste as a sustainable alternative to cement in mortar, contributing to greener building practices.

    • Virtual Reality Training for Methanol Bunkering

To ensure safe operations in the evolving maritime industry’s use of methanol as a green fuel, students from the Diploma in Computer Engineering and Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering have developed an immersive VR training application to familiarise seafarers with the procedures and precautions required for safe methanol bunkering operations. SP’s Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) is the first in the Asia-Pacific region to conduct such training for seafarers.

Student Startups: Fostering Social Entrepreneurship

SPOH 2025 will also feature innovative student startups from the School of Business (SB) through the BETA programme. Ten startups will be available for viewing from 9 to 11 January 2025, 10 am to 6 pm, at T18B Level 5.

The BETA programme, inspired by Babson College’s Entrepreneurial Thought and Action framework, was conceived in 2019. It equips students with hands-on venture creation experience, industry mentorships and a strong emphasis on social impact, providing them with a comprehensive entrepreneurial education that is second to none.

The enhanced BETA programme, developed in partnership with the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and supported by Mentoring SG, will commence in the academic year 2025/2026.  All Year 1 SB student teams will receive seed funding of S$1,000 to support their ventures and foster a socially responsible entrepreneurial mindset.

For more information on the startups that will be showcased, please refer to Annex B.

Accelerated Pathway Programmes: Shortening the Path to Success

SP recognises the importance of continuous learning and allows eligible SP students from 15 Diploma programmes to fast-track their university education through the Accelerated Pathway Programmes (APPs) by up to one year in addition to existing exemptions for the diplomas.

SP offers the highest number of Accelerated Pathway Programmes (APP) to esteemed local universities. These allow students to seamlessly take university modules during their Diploma studies and earn credits recognised by esteemed tertiary institutions like the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

Karl Steven Velasco Orjalo, an SP Diploma in Information Technology student, wants to pursue a Computer Science and Design degree at SUTD. He is undergoing the SP-SUTD Accelerated Pathway Programme as part of his final semester in SP. For his final year project, Karl and his team developed the SP Shuttle Bus Tracking app that streamlined the bus tour management system for SPOH via a mobile application. The app tracks bus locations in real-time, assigns student helpers to tasks and verifies scheduling rosters. This improved the overall efficiency and communication between staff and student helpers on the ground, enhancing the visitor experience.
