From Normal Academic stream to becoming a Lee Kuan Yew award recipient

09 May 2019

Article featured SP Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT) graduate, Goh Aik Lang, whose initial plan was to enrol in SP’s Diploma in Accountancy. He applied via the Early Admissions Exercise and qualified for it. However, his plan was destroyed when his English grade did not meet the requirements. Instead of feeling demoralised, he started to find the next best course. Although accounting has always been his interest, Aik Lang was also amazed by how analytics can be applied to help improve businesses and processes. SP’s DBIT caught his eye and he successfully applied for it through the Joint Poly Special Admissions Exercise by tapping on his achievements in handball. In SP, Aik Lang excelled in both his studies and CCA. He played for the school and nation and won himself multiple awards. During his secondary school studies, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and his dad became the sole breadwinner of the family. In order to help out with the family’s situation, Aik Lang worked part-time during the school holidays and helped to take care of his mother. Just last year, his family financial situation worsened when his father had to stop work due to an injury. Despite the obstacles in his life, Aik Lang stayed resilient and worked harder than anyone else. For his hard work, he received the Lee Kuan Yew award and Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) Gold Medal yesterday. COMMS Note: This is part of our Graduation 2019 stories.
